You can collect parts of maps for treasures at the taverns and when you defeat captains in battles (not 100% sure about captains been a while, but you 100% get them at taverns).

Note: they don`t always sell them.

Treasure locations change each game. It is in a different location each time. The only thing you can do is find all four pieces of the treasure map and locate it in game.

There is a known bug in the original game that sometimes places a location - treasure, family member etc but it does not show up in the game play. the only solution I have found is to head for the nearest port and divide up the plunder then continue your career which seems to force the game to re-spawn the location and it will show up, sometimes in a different position but your map will update. I always save my game before dividing up the plunder so I can go back and play the game and ignore the troublesome treasure. Also west of Caracau could be anywhere west of Caracao not just in the vicinity or near, I once found treasure on a different island when it said north of xxxxx.
