Sid Meier's Pirates!

Where are you getting your pirate fix?
Pirate games have always held a special place for me but I honestly can't think of any I really liked besides SM's and KOEI's UCWII:New Horizons.
Where do you guys get your pirates/naval fix?

You tried Sea dogs: to each their own?

Port Royal is ok, nothing beats UCW series though.
Except uncharted waters online, that game is bad

Akella's pirate games (Sea Dogs, Sea Dogs 2 -aka Pirates of the Caribbean-, Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales, Age of Pirates 2: city of abandoned ships) is to me the absolute best in pirate action. However, the only game I really played was Sea Dogs, as the others add a lot of dumb side content like ground missions and such that honestly I couldn't care about. They do have their downsides, though, they are clunky as hell and honestly rather confusing, with a lot of poorly explained feature clutter and really hard to get some semblance of story going on. If one's capable of muscling through the awful interface and swordfighting though, the naval combat is pretty outstanding, even though I don't think it improved too much from the original SD besides visual garish.

I got Windward a while ago on HB, and it's not a bad game, but I ended up getting Pirates! on Steam (god knows where I have the CD anymore). The game's not badly presented, but it is super tedious and repetitive, offering little incentive to developing an area and mostly consists of sailing to a new area, cleaning it of pirates, move to the next area and so on.

Different setting, but Rebel Galaxy offers 2D broadside spaceship combat, and it's basically a sailing game with a coat of space paint. SPAZ is also in the vein.

Thanks for those suggestions guys. And yeah I have Windward, it was a little too arcadey for my taste, but all and all not a bad game. I will give Sea Dogs a look. You liked the first one in the series the best?
Ottomic 2017 年 5 月 31 日 下午 12:03
Yeah, because it's the most focused on ship gameplay. City of abandoned ships might be worth a look however, I haven't gone too much past the first hour, but it certainly looks deep as ♥♥♥♥ from an RPG standpoint. I'm not sure how optional are the non naval bits but if they are it probably has my recommendation if only because it's probably the deepest and most refined game, being the latest installment.

Swordfights are kinda garbage tho.

Black Flag was fun on the sea, some pretty awesome sea battles.
Other than that, it has been pretty meh. This game is also overpriced for something that came out in 2004 or 05 whatever. 10 bucks. F that noise.

Yeah, this game is great. I still sit down and play it for a while. I just don't understand why so many people love it but no games seem to have come out that nails it quite like this.

Good news; Black Flag sea gameplay in a standalone game; Skull & Bones.

I might just pick this one up.

Edit: Oh for f sakes, it's a multiplayer only game. Well nevermind whatever I wrote above.

Did you watch any of it? It seems like COD on ships, it'snot looking like the game we want.

^ I actually didn't I'm still consuming all the gaming news. I just watched this, but it seems it's multiplayer only. Bleh.
Timmy the Tooth 2017 年 6 月 14 日 上午 7:08
Yeah, I got my hopes up when I heard about it, went to check it out, was instantly knocked back down. I guess they could put in an adventure or story mode, and that would be great, but it looks like the focus is on multiplayer quick matches.

What I really can't understand is the lack of mods for Sid Meier's Pirates. Mod it people!!!!!11! I know about the flag mods and the no flag wavers and realistic cannonball speeds and so on. But how do you change things like nationality of ports? Names of ports? Locations? Adding new nations? New ships? How come no one has tried this and there's nothing on the internet about this?

I'm not a modder or I would do this myself. I trued looking at the game files, unpacking the fpk files, but I can't find any obvious config files for places, etc.

It just seems like such an obvious open world moddable paradise, and I don't understand why flag mods and cannonball speeds are the best changes we have.

There's plenty of mods over on http://www.hookedonpirates.com/ There are still some players actively making mods today on that forum.
Obi Want A Smokey 2017 年 6 月 16 日 下午 12:48
I already stated, I know about those mods. They're simple graphics replacements. I'm talking about modding the map, adding ships and nations, maybe expanding the map.
