Ship names
Have you given your flagship (or any other ship for that matter) a custom name and if so, what was it?

So far I've had a Ship-of-the-Line called "Sylvana", after "Last Exile".

nothing I come up with beats what's already in the game, so, I just leave it.

although I may change one of the ship names when there are duplicates -- for example, I think every 20th pirate ship is named, "Revenge"

Well, for a pirate game I guess "The Princess Bride" reference is basically mandatory.

And in my most recent game I've got a sloop named "Alexandria" since it's for running into peeple and boarding them quickly, in a Harlock inspired "let me stab you with my ship" way; plus a Ship-of-the-Line named "Devil's Reach", [jk] which unfortunately lives up to the name a little too well. It keeps sinking ships I'd wanted to capture. :steamhappy: [/jk]

I usually sail a Royal Sloop, and I name it "Surprise" after Jack Aubrey's frigate in the Patrick O'brian Napoleon War sea battle fiction series.

Try using the chain shot (tears down sails and mast) and grape shot (reduces personnel numbers) instead of the round shot (destroys the ship).

I have found that I can usually pound a ship beyond recognition without sinking it, so long as I avoid the round shot.

I know, I know, ::shrugs:: but I'll be like "oh, let me just knock out some guns to make getting a good broadside safer" and then it starts sinking :steamfacepalm:. Ironically, my previous SotL which was named after the "Kill'em all" Sylvana from Last Exile sank fewer ships, even when I wanted to try living up to the name. :steamsalty: Perhaps I shouldn't have equipped the Reach with the historical forty-seven cannons.

Fortunately, I've managed to avoid anything really important, like the Baron's ship, but that's why I added the "Alexandria", so I'd have a faster ship to just rush in and board anything I can't risk sinking.

I am enjoying playing the song in the background while blasting anything on the sea however.

Usually the ship names are ok, so i'll leave them as it is. Exception: Those named "Revenge" seem way too common, so i'll rename those. I like the "Sea ♥♥♥♥♥" name :)

Ship battles? I don't bother with them. I attack from upwind and jink my way down on them, avoiding their cannon fire, board 'em in the smoke, and fight it out on deck. Then I sell them undamaged at a good price. You need an agile and fast ship like my preferred Royal Sloop, well-upgraded, but because you don't have to man the guns you don't need a large crew.
