Attacking Settlements

Why can I sometimes attack towns, cities, etc. and other times I can't? At war with the English right now but I can't even attack a little English town. I just go into town instead.

That happens when you dont have a bad reputation with the nation

So if you're on good terms with them, there's no way to go on bad terms with them (say, by attacking them)?

I'm pretty damn sure if you blow up many trade ships they will hate you ;p.
Also maybe spacebar near towns to fire cannons at them.

Yes, spacebar will fire cannons at large cities with the stone ramparts out front. Doesn't seem to work with the smaller settlements though. Was just wondering if there was a way to take them over and put them under the control of another faction.

You can never attack a Settlement. If it has a Mayor then you can never attack and replace the Mayor. Only larger cities with Governors can be attacked and Governors replaced. The only way to change the nationality of the settlements is to sack all the surrounding cities and replace the Governors with a different nationality. This will take years for the settlements to change hands.

Thanks much. Only cities with governors it is then. I still think they should've given you the option to put native chiefs in charge instead of any of the four oppressive European factions. XD

And native chiefs were not oppressive? Try enslaving and waring against other tribes… No culture is innocent ;)
