E.g., my laptop has "Volume Down" or some such for F6, so when I need the actual F6, I have to press and hold the Special Key then press F6. Same for Shift-F6. Press and hold Special Key, Shift, then F6.
It's a pain in the posterior to be sure.
Another thing you could try, for about $20 or so you can get a full-size wireless keyboard. At least, you can for a PC, I don't know about a Mac or a PS4.
You plug a little USB nano transmitter into a USB port, then you can use the external keyboard instead of the built-in one. It won't have any Special Laptop keys, so all the keys will work just like on a regular PC. This would be especially useful to get the full-size numeric keypad that is often missing from laptops. The navigation, sea battles, sword-fighting and dancing controls are much easier on the numeric keypad.
