I just started the game, played a bit, then quit. Started it up again, and played, quit with no problems like the one you're having. I have an AMD GPU and Intel CPU. I hear with a lot of other games you have to mess with NVidea settings, usually turning off the NVidea control of the application, so that could be it.
I am running SMPirates in -full screen- with the 1020x786 resolution. (I may have the second number wrong but it's close enough to reflect what it is, despite my memory issues.) All details turned up and on. There are guides in the 'Guides' section and Google that can help you get different resolutions if needed.
When I exit the game I notice windows like my Steam friends box get resized. Restarting Steam usually fixes this.
Have you tried shutting down Steam? Have you tried restarting your computer? Are your drivers up to date? Are you using Windows 10 or something older? Are you using a compatibility mode?
Old games like this can have errors that produce dump files. The old Total Wars for instance would take big dumps when crashing for example. Newer games figured out better ways to deal with crashes, but older games will still poop the bed. You have to clean it up and the best way to do so is with a program like C-Cleaner from Piriform.
Safe and free, clean temporary files and you can also fix registry errors - but vicious nerds will contest that it's harmful to fix your registry with a program like that. While they are technically correct, you might lower the life of your hard drive from ten years to nine and a half for example. The change isn't significant unless you are a contentious know-it-all.
Having up to date OS, Drivers, and a clean registry will do wonders when you restart your computer. Apparently Rain views this as 'cultist behavior' but it works for me with older games. Let me know what's going on.
