Sid Meier's Pirates!

Still don't get fencing
Hi, i've been playing this game for a while, but i still don't get how fencing works. I mean, throwing a guy off his boat isn't a problem, what i don't understand is how the advantage bar works. I looked at the numbers and it seemed like i was loosing crew faster than my oponent, even though i parry all his attacks and lend a hit each time afterwards. Can someone shed a light on this for me please? Because i thought it would be useful in capturing ships as your captain gets old, like winning the fight without throwing the other dude in the sea.

Oh, i nearly forgot, what's the point in selecting the cutlass for a fight? it's so slow it's nearly useless but maybe it has to do with the things i don't understand.

I read that the cutlass is faster at defending than the other 2 sword choices. Some information like this you can find in the game manual:

"Prior to beginning a duel, you will be
asked to choose a sword type. The Rapier is faster on attacks and
slower on defense, the Cutlass is the opposite, and the Longsword is
balanced."

From the game manual: "Effects of Morale on Battle
Your crew’s morale at the time they entered the battle affects their
performance in combat. If they are happy they fight like lions and
can defeat an enemy much bigger than they; if unhappy they fight
much less successfully.
The enemy forces also have a morale rating. In general, crewmen
aboard warships or pirate vessels have higher morale, while the crew
from merchant vessels have lower morale"

Forget about looking at the advantage bar.
You win if
1. You finished the enemy captain. Nomatter how many crews you've left and where advantage bar is pointing.
2. Enemy crews were all dead. And you just need to hit the enemy captain once to win, even you're about to loose in the sword fight.
If just the opposite you lost.

Loosing your crew faster if your your enemy have much more crews than your's. Of course, morale also counts.
Parry all his attacks won't help unless you have much more crews than him.
Each successful hit also reduce some enemy crews. And as well as yours if being hit.
The more your crews the better the advantage.

When you are old or when you're playing at hardest mode.
Reduce the number of enemy crew to 1 before you board the enemy ship.
You still need 1 hit to finish the enemy captain.
This is a good game, hope you enjoyed it. :steamhappy:
