This means in order to change the max zoom distance and fov you'd have to download tank viewer extract the maps, and edit the file that controls those variables to how you see fit, and then save the map. The reason the mods that change these settings don't work is because they are resource files, and the game treats them thusly, not as a map mod as the mod developers intended.
I can change just about any settings, even forcing the game to load an entire region, or remove the fog:

note: the third pic is very gpu heavy, ds 1 is not very well optimized for graphics cards, but cpu is pretty good, i get about 60 fps in the top one even though the ai, and other stuff is being processed by cpu

I'm still not sure of the cause unfortunately, and it only affects those 2 regions as far as I know. The crypts completely break though, the engine can't decide which region you are in so nodes will randomly unload. Obviously you could most likely safely reduce the size of the frustum and you'd most likely be ok.

Some more screenshots + the mod(Mod folder)
The seeVERYfar.dsres modifies the fog values, sets them 5000 near, and 9000 far it was really an experiment to see the effect. I changed those values for both the MP map and Kingdom of Ehb, but changing the MP map's frustum size will be tricky at best, impossible at worst because each region has its own frustum size. The only file I changed on Kingdom of Ehb was main.gas, this controls all the camera settings and frustum sizes.
All old saves are still compatible on the modified map, but any changes won't apply to those saves.
edited to reduce confusion
The fog settings for single player are in:
Resources\Logic.dsres -> world\global\moods\default_moods.gas
Resources\Logic.dsres -> world\global\moods\map_world\moods1.gas
The google drive link above is no longer available, so it took some digging for me to find how out to remove the grey fog. In each of the moods I just added 100 to the distances. I have not tested in all locations yet.
Any chance to get some additional information to fix camera zoom? I didn't get the thing with unpackaging and the link doesn't work anymore, alas.
