And read your manual book - Check "store page - Dungeon Siege": consult the manual (24 pages)
(I lose so many mana potions hitting m for map).
I assume there's no key for highlighting loot on the ground (I think I remember that also).
It's a bit non-intuitive and cumbersome it sounds like - 'spell 1, hit 3, then click, now spell 2, hit 4, then click'.
No because you have 4 slots: Slot 1, hit 1 (Melee attack) - Slot 2, hit 2 (Ranged attack) and slots 3 & 4; hits 3 & 4 (2 spells) ...

"I assume there's no key for highlighting loot on the ground (I think I remember that also)."
Yes just hit keyboard Key: (left) ALT ... and Z to collect them ...
Huh, when I hit alt, it just makes a noise, not highlighting items.
Btw most of my game didn't work until I dropped the resolution to 800*600.
Here's a screenshot with the button I was talking about (I have my mouse cursor over it)

edit: Well I did have my cursor over it until I pressed f12 to take a screenshot and the help thing came up but you can see the icon bottom right still (4th across. next to the map button)
You can equip two active spells. Having two spells equipped to your active spells allows you to swap between them in the middle of combat with a single button press, but not cast both at the same time. Pressing 3 or 4 will equip your first or second active spell respectively, and clicking on a target will automatically cast the selected spell, if the spell can be used on whatever you clicked (e.g. you can't heal an enemy or cast a harmful spell on an ally). It's like melee weapons and ranged weapons, you can have one of each equipped at once, but only one can be actively used at once, although swapping between your two equipped items is instant.
For loot, pressing the alt key will toggle loot tags on the ground. While it's enabled, items will have a box with their name above them in the world which you can click on to more easily pick them up.
As for the cumbersome controls, it should just be click. If you want to swap spells, 4 & click. Swapping back, 3 & click.
Seems a bit limiting to only have 2 spells active, but that's the style of the game.
I agree, there are so so many spells and yet we're stuck with 2 at a time with that method. You can hold the spell icon and a drop down comes up showing the other spells in the book to choose from which makes swapping faster.
