Any windows 10 fix yet?
I tried the guide for windows 8 and whatever in the steam guides, but that didn't do anything. Running the game in compatibility mode doesn't seem to do anything either. The cutscene plays (at a low framerate), and then the game starts (at an extremely low framerate), and one second into the game, the whole thing freezes.

Anyone have any luck getting this blasted thing to work?

EDIT: Turns out that complex shadows are the culprit for the extremely low framerate. Turning them off gave me a second of smooth gameplay before the whole thing froze, so at least that's out of the way... though it sucks to not have shadows.

No offence, but I already stated that I figured out the low framerate thing. I'm just concerned about getting the game to work, as opposed to freezing after one second of game-time.

That said, I might take a second look at that stuff afterwards if the game ever does end up working, so thanks for that.

There's been a bit of an update.

Now, the game DOES seem to work (no idea why it didn't the first time), and the game no longer freezes. However, my framerate is now pretty garbage, and I already set my nvidia setting to use the correct graphics card, so I'm not sure what's up with that. I tried what the guide said about a low framerate, but that didn't work sadly.

Either way, it's a step forward. I'm not sure exactly which of the steps fixed the freezing, but that's not a concern now. Thankfully anyway. I'll try out a few other settings a bit later, see what makes it tick. maybe just turning down the resolution will make it playable, but honestly, my computer should be more than powerful enough to run this thing.

Strange situation for sure.

I've only picked it up recently during a sale and it seems to work fine for me on Windows 10.

I still can't find a solid win 10 fix. It always freezes when I start a new game.

I've got the same issue. Game freezes after a second. Cut scenes seemed fine and all, but can't play any of it.

I installed the game just to test this. Everything below works. Just realized Steam game doesn't come with Legend of Aranna. I'll have find my old CD from storage... or something.

Try enabling DirectPlay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XYyGB-Tn3g
Also to modernize the graphics settings

I have an AMD card so in the AMD driver software I have VSync and Triple Buffering enabled by default unless the application says otherwise. I find that that prevents a lot of coil whine by preventing the refresh rates/FPS from getting ridiculous in old games.

Hope this helps.

Compatibility settings.

Program files / Steam / Steamapps / common / dungeon siege 1
Find DungeonSiege application and right click on it, then select Properties
Go to Compatibility tab and check [run this program in compatibility mode for] then select [Windows 98 / Windows Me] and click Apply

DS1 came out in 2002 and was optimized for Windows versions of the time. Enjoy!

I am running windows 10 and have zero problems, so your issues might be something else, like video card compatibility or something (unless they have had a fix since 2017).

Perhaps try run the game in Windowed mode or lower resolutions and see if this has any effect. Go to dungeon siege properties within your library and go to Set launch options... type fullscreen=false. If That doesnt work try using the Voodoo tool which you van download.

I have made a guide on all kinds of technical aspects. I've gathered as much intel online on how to fix all kinds of crashes. Maybe check this out and tell me if it was any good!

Guys, here's a fix I had for the exact same problem, edit your DungeonSiege.ini file (Becareful what you play with!) in your user documents, and make sure the top has something to this effect:> driver_description = (Insert Video Card) - Hardware <You get how the game identifies your card from the DSVideoConfig.exe installed where your game is. Hope this helps anyone for a quick fix
