Is There Much Of A Point To Farming?
When you're relatively unlikely to get a seed back, you can't really have a sustainable farm unless there's something I'm missing.

Re-bump...

I found that resources eventually respawn on the map, (unlike in Don't Starve). THe point of a farm is to plant resources close to your base for easy harvesting. I plant in 5x5 squares, then use the resource bomb collector in the center to gather the entire 25 squares with a single bomb.

Also, you will eventually get potted plants -- these are super useful to farm since they don't require re-planting.

Indeed, potted plants are very useful, but as for farming, I don't think so....

Farming is to have an easily accessible and convenient stockpile of supplies when you need it.

I agree that the seed drop for farms is very low. I am trying to make a sustainable farm but I do not get enough seeds from harvesting the 'crops' to keep it going for long. I have to constantly harvest in the wild to keep the farm going, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a farm.

Perhaps the devs could tweek seed generation for plants grown in dirt to provide more incentive for having a farm.

My impression of the game generally is that farms are meant NOT to be sustainable -- they are meant to have a quick influx of frequently needed resources. I think the devs are encouraging us to continue to collect resources instead of stopping as soon as we get a few seeds. I do think it's an intended game mechanic... since each plant seems to drop x amount of resources, and a seed takes the place of some other material.

@ehyder - *waves Hi!* :-)

I did notice that I tend to get more seeds from the wild and was starting to wonder how intentional that was, as opposed to bad luck with farming.

@KatherineOfSky - Big wave back!

The current system doesn't feel like "farming" or "having a quick influx of resources" it's more like half your drops are "locked" behind seeds and you have to wait 15 minutes to get them. I have like 50 furtle dirt, but only have 25 placed because that's pretty much all you need to burn through seeds as you get them.

I really wish we could have sustainable farms, that is one of my only big disappointments with this game so far.

The farms tend to be quite small as the resources are hard to come by and seeds are hard to find in an amount that would farms make productive.

Currently I have two bases for the first and the second biome with 3 farms each with a 5x5 raster to farm with a harvest bomb.

-When I need the resources, the farms are to small to get a good amount out of it, so I need to spend an huge amount of time gathering in the wilderness anyway.

-If I want to keep them running continuesly, the amount of seeds I get from the farms are way to small so I need to spend an huge amount of time gathering in the wilderness anyway

In my eyes, the farms are not much of a use.

In all but the last biome, I've found that I change the crops I plant -- basically just plant all seeds, then harvest bomb them, and move up in plant tiers as I progress. My two 5x5 farms are rarely empty -- seems to balance out with the exploring & wild harvesting. (In other words, I don't reserve certain areas for specific crops, just plant the next tiers as they are unlocked).

Farming seems broken in the current 2019 version. No matter what plant you plant in your dirt, within a couple of generations you'll run out seeds.

They simply don't generate nearly enough seeds to sustain farming.

Maybe it's meant to be a supplement. Say you find 50 in the wild. Farming enables you to get 75, but won't allow you to sustain the crop because it's 50% yield. It's a matter of making sure the time you spend farming X yield (25) is less than the time you spend searching in the wild for the same amount.
