I can't believe it: More demonization of mental illness!

As a mentally ill person who suffers from delusions and other things, I'm tired and sick of literally every single horror content in media focusing on demonizing mentally ill people, as if we were monsters, and this is just the most recent example.

It feels like the creators are a bunch of neurotypicals who barely did any research and only consulted ableist psychologists at most, and were like "Ohhh you know what's scary??? Mental Illness!!!!!!!!!!! hahaha our further explotation of mentally ill people will get us Big Riches and nobody will care because who CARES for these people amirite, they're all irl monsters anyway"

Please, do not support this game or company, and think hard about the role of media, especially horror media, into making our lives a living hell.

Of course theres ones that are not bad, such as Shovel Knight, a wonderful piece about hope and love and shovels.

The horror genre, while being my favourite, is one of the most offensive ones. I already said it, but most of horror pieces focus on painting mentally ill people (insane/mad, as you like to call us) as the evil, and if not then it focuses on "decaying sanity" (Amnesia the dark descent, Eternal Darkness). To list a few examples (but not all, because there's Far too many): Mad Father, Sanitarium, Outlast, Silent Hill Series, these are the msot prominent examples. Maybe you just Can't see why it's bad, but I can guarantee, it is.

Can you make a non offensive horror game about mental illness? Sure! Re:Kinder is a wonderful game about it, made by a mentally ill person (who unfortunately commited suicide after releasing the definite version). And there are horror games that have other themes, such as Five Nights At Freddy's, which while not being a classic or a Really good game, it's refreshing and shows that you can make horror without relying on ♥♥♥♥♥♥ stereotypes (I haven't layed the msot recent one, however, so if something like this pops up, I apologize).

Basically you are all proving my point, by telling me to not be offended or that I'm exaggerating, or the ones that straight up tell me I'm a monster, thank you so much for proving me Right. I knew I'd get this kind of response, but I'm tired of staying silent about this matter and other matters as well that affect me and other people. I am not a troll. I genuinely want to make this a better world, and while I can't do that by leaving a comment in a community full of fans of these things, I felt like I had to DO something after crossing paths with this horrible game.

With all that said, I can't wait for the day I meet you all in the pit and purify your foolish evil souls. (Props to davidb11 who wasn't hateful, but honestly, please don't conform to the enemy in order to not get hate, mate, these people all hate you as much as they hate me.)

It's a game designed for dark humor.
You can't claim it's racist. It's just not how it works. That is akin to claiming Doom caused Columbine because Erik Harris made maps for Doom.
Though, perhaps a better example would be blaming Remington for Columbine because they made shotguns. :)

As for your pronoun usage, well, most people don't understand the concept of Multiple personality disorder, so try not to get angry at people.

Amnesia. Danial, the main character, does not have a mental illness. His sanity decays when scary things happen, when he is in the dark, when he looks at monsters. That is a very lovecraftien idea, the idea of going made from some horror beyond the shores. It is not representative of mental illness

Eternal Darkness. Same deal.

Outlast. You're main character is not insane. Some of the inmates are, but that's because they've been tortured and experimented on by the staff. The are defined as monsters not by what ever got them stuck in the asylum in the first place, but because the countless tortures have driven them mad. Believe me, there is a difference.

I will not touch on all your points because I simply do not have the energy for a lengthy debate for someone who I know will not change their views.

Some advice 'mate'. Acting high and mighty, talking about purifying our evil foolish souls. That makes us dislike you. And you can't blame us for it. You paint the world in such a black and white fashion. You make yourself seem just as bad as those who may push you around. Advice for the future: Do not belittle, do not insult.

If what you are saying is true, and you are not simply some troll or someone seeking attention (which sadly is a thing) I recommend you talk to a teacher or phone a support number and get help. Not because you are crazy, but because you sound like you're in a rough spot. Get some help before it's too late.

But do not take it out on the rest of the world. Perhaps it's someway to make you feel better, but I advise against this course of action. You will simply make more people dislike you which feeds depression. That, and it weakens your arguments.

One final note: Shovel Knight is all about love and hope and shovels? That actually sounds like a really trolly thing to say.

Get over yourself. Art can explore ANY topic it feels appropriate, and if "mental illness" is off the cards, we can forget about Hamlet, Taxi Driver, you name it. What's acceptable in your opinion, fluffy pink bunny wabbits hopping in a green, grassy field? If it offends you, ignore it. I've learned to ignore Michael Bay movies, because the sheer banality and condescending nature of those films offends the LIVING ♥♥♥♥ out of me. Well you make decent points there Darling, but, it is a game first and formost, and games are about immersion, putting yourself in the characters place. In some games it can be self insert, Gorden Freeman of Half Life never makes an utterance, he is ment to be a blank slate to be assigned the personality of the player. When a protagonist speaks, and has manerisms you have to care about the protagonist, or the game will not work if you don't care or identify as the person your playing as. Amnesia (The disorder not the game) is an easy trope to give protagonist due to the fact they can learn with the audiance/player, when they find out information then /we/ know. Maddness, Psycosis, Delusions or Mentally Ill characters are aginst the normal, alot of people do not have these conditions, thus it adds to the atmosphear and psycological horror when we are playing as a character we do not understand. Thus becoming harder to discern Reality, Madness/Mental Disorder/Supernatural. Adding to the essense of fear.

I honestly doubt it was the developers goal to put down or be unsympathetic toward the Mentally Ill, and as you have stated you are not buying this game (Which is your right to do so) how do you know how it is handled? Is it supernatural or are they mentally ill? Is it madness? Psychosis? The fact you have not played it and judged it so harshly is a mistake.

You have every right to feel the way you do. No one is going to force you to buy this game, no one, and I am not here to change your mind either. I am just saying, without playing it, how can you condemn it? If other people like the game, and so far it has positive reviews, why are you trying to take their happiness away?

Dementia and Schizophrenia ARE scary.
