Not a Diablo clone
This game is much more than just another Diablo clone. It may look like one and sometimes even play like one, but trust me, this is a true RPG, with lots of interesting quests and characters and a very good storyline. Not just slash, loot, rinse, start it all over again. This is no Torchlight. Maybe that's why it's so underrated. It attracted the wrong crowd. For people who want more from their RPGs than a mere clickfest this is just what the doctor ordered. A near masterpiece.

Also, learn some history. Diablo itself was a "clone" or reimagining of a much earlier game called Rogue, which also spawned the entire Rogue-like genre. Diablo 1 was basically live-action Rogue with a really fancy tileset.

Every Diablo clone is an Action RPG, but not every Action RPG is a Diablo clone. A Diablo clone is a game that plays like Diablo (nobody calls them Rogue clones). Dungeon Siege 1 & 2 are Diablo clones. Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, Gothic, Risen and many others are Action RPGs, not Diablo clones. Torchlight, Sacred 1 &2, Titan Quest and countless others are Diablo clones. Dungeon Siege 3 is a Diablo clone, but subverts the subgenre by fleshing out characters and quests, bringing it closer to Action RPGs that are not Diablo clones. It may quack and walk like a duck, but it's a beast of a different kind.

Yes indeed, though The incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing is good too but it's certainly a Diablo clone, but i'd call it a Diablo II clone.
DSIII is certainly not a Diablo clone, if you ask me it's like Dragon Age meets Diablo.
You just don't get to control multiple characters at once and it's not nearly as big, but the play/control style kind of remind me of this.
It's a fantastic game that didn't get the praise it should have when it released because everyone was so shocked at the difference between DSII and DSIII.
For players who have never played DS or DSII, or aren't crazy about games changing and love games like Diablo and Dragon Age, you're most likely going to enjoy this game without a doubt.

I'm enjoying the game thus far (although it currently won't boot up - grr). The mechanics aren't my favorite, but I really don't see anything wrong with them either. It isn't a Diablo clone, although I see decent similarities. It seems a blend of Dragon Age, Diablo, and a little bit of Kingdoms of Amalur. I think the part holding it back from being a fantastic game is actually the RPG element - it is away from Diablo enough where that matters. The characters are *almost* bond-able. You don't get the same interaction as you do in Dragon Age, or the comedy of a few in KoA, but they're enjoyable nonetheless.

just tried it again after god knows how long... and with a controller this time (forgot to mention i got this through pre-order so i was stuck with the keybinds for god knows how long making it unplayable)

first time i played:
hated the game, hated the controlls

second time i played (after the keybind fix)
hated the game, controlls made it playable, couldn't stand it after an hour or so

third (this) time:
hate the game, even with controller this game feels weird.

your words about this not beeing a diablo clone make me laugh :D (sorry you couldn't use a better franchise to compare it to haha)

diablo 1 & 2 where fantastic games... then new dev team comes and they tried to do all kinds of thing and failed horibly

dungeon siege 1 & 2 i loved the games (sure there was the diablo'esc gameplay... it's common and i like it) 3 came and i immediately hated myself for buying it!

what i want to say is... this game could have been so much more! but only due to the devs aiming for console (and this beeing a complete console rip right from the getgo) the game lacks everything that made the other games great.

i keep saying it... diablo 3 and DS3 should have been PC release only... if they wanted a arpg on console just create a whole new game and don't port bad console crap to PC!! (or create console crap that they can easily port to console like they did with diablo 3)

DS3 is a bit too dumbed down IMO. It is great for console game fans but it lacks the finnese of some other RPGs such as the AD&D games and the previous DS games (which are not upto the same standard as the AD&D games IMO). Saying this, it is still enjoyable in it's own right but I am just glad I did not pay full initial release price for it.

The only thing the old DnD games had going for them was their stories. Because mechanic wise they were royal travesties. DnD rules simply are not compabitle with dungeon crawlers (hence why those games were littered with potions, wands and scrolls every 2 feet when you would never find so many items like that in an actual pen and paper play session).
