How do I escape battles?

In the original PS1 version, there was a way to escape battles right? By holding the top L and R buttons? There doesn't seem to be a way to map anything to the shoulder buttons in this version.

Does that really work? The only thing I have encountered was a materia called 'Exit' which had exactly that effect.

if youre using a controller, hold Rb and back to escape battle. Or on the ps3 controller ri and start.

ya your party will start physically running the opposite direction, then eventually you'll escape

hold down the 2 buttons until you have fled you can change the button controls for controller before you launch the game only keyboard in game, also a good tip attack while running away like 80% of the time you will run after your move is done i find it helps you run away a lot faster than just sitting there holding run down
