How do I use a controller?
I've tried and tried and can't get a controller to work with the game. I have an Xbox 360 controller for Windows, and I can select/change the buttons in the configuration, but when I go into the game the controller won't work and it'll only let me use a keyboard.... which really sucks for this game.

I was having issues too until I did this. That fixed all my problems other than not having the d-pad work.

Im not sure what you mean by in the game...
If you mean you have FF7 running and you went to config yes you have no controller options there.

For controller options you need to to click play then on the window that pops up you go to settings and click on the joystick tab. This is where you change the buttons for the controller.

If this is what your looking for then know that the game does not recognize the right toggle, the D pad, or the LT or RT shoulder buttons.

The only direction option you have is to use the Left toggle and while you can't use the right toggle pushing it in still counts as a button lol.

As for rekeying it this is what you want to do which is basically the same set up as if you were playing it on the ps1.

Okay = B / Button 2
Cancel = A / Button 1
Menu = Y / Button 4
Up,left,right,down = Left toggle no other option.
Start = Start / button 8
Switch = X / Button 3
Page up = LB / Button 5
Page Down = RB / Button 6
Target = Press in left toggle / Button 9
Assist = Back / Button 7
Camera = Press in right toggle / Button 10

This game does not like the xbox remote as they didn't do to good a job updating it as much as this game deserved it. So if you want to use the D pad, left toggle, LT, and RT buttons you'll have to use anther program like GlovePie or something.

I hope this helped

Ok. In the pop up menu I changed the buttons to what you have down, and thanks for that... but when I go into the game I still have to use the keyboard. It's like it won't recognize this Xbox 360 controller. I use for alot of games on Steam and have never had a problem until now. Is there a step I'm missing?

I also use a 360 controller. Is it turned on before you launch the game?

Yeah, the light is on and everything. It works when I change the buttons in the pop-up menu. I even played another game on Steam with the controller and it works perfectly. I have another 360 controller. Maybe I'll try plugging that one in.

What do you mean by in the game, I forgot to tell you there is one stupid menu that ignores the controller. After you start the game this menu with a list of key commands pops up, just hit X on your keyboard. Then your controller should work... if not I have no idea what the issue could be as im using a xbox 360 controller.

But if you have made it passed that menu and its till not working you only have 2 option to down load a program like http://www.xpadder.com/ I would suggest GlovePie as its free but for some reason I can't get it to work with my 360 controller lol.

Or to go to Start, Control Pannel, View Devices and printers, and check to make sure your xbox controller is working right there. If it is id try Xpadder...

Thanks for your help everyone. I had to do what Meng quoted. At first I didn't know exactly what that meant, but I realized what he meant when I opened up the Windows start menu and so then I searched for 'setup USB Controller',. I had to select the Xbox 360 controller for preference. Funny that's all what it took. I appreciate everyone taking the time to help.

@Prime Zero: By in game I just meant when I started the game up the controller didn't work anywhere in the game. Not in the pop up menu, and not in game menus or during gameplay. Thanks for all the help and effort.

I did the search usb thing in the start up menu but when I click advanced, the drop down box says "none" when I click on it, my 360 contorller is not listed, but when I search in the device/printer area, it shows it in there, ANY other ideas gents? or ladies?

For those that wish they could use the Left Thumbstick instead of the D-Pad, I created an AutoHotkey script to map Left Thumbstick input to D-Pad input. It works pretty well for me.

Eight years later, and this helped me out. Thank you!

Most informative,

Sure wish I could change it to the d-pad like it was originally designed for. Annoying navigating the battle menu with analog stick. Also some mini games don't work as intended for instance the safe in Nibelheim Mansion.
Anyone got d-pad to work? Can't be made to work with .cfg file editing or maybe a mod?

I have other controllers non-xInput but they have cords. =(

Guess I will have to buy a wireless dInput controller if I want wireless digital control, but who knows if that will work either. Probably is my guess.
masternoxx1 Sep 11, 2023 @ 11:03pm
Instead of buying new wireless controller, which btw are nearly all xInput nowadays, so won't solve the problem, better solution is to map keyboard directional keys to the d-pad with xPadder.

xPadder may introduce some lag but does it matter for this game?

only other way I can think of is to buy usb to PS2 converter and then a wireless PS2 controller, which would probably work, but would the analog button function correctly, to switch from analog to d-pad? Someone would have to try it...

With the xPadder way I have the option of both and don't have to buy or wait for anything...

I will still try a wireless PS2 controller with adapter and I have one in storage, and will report back
