Fort Condor
If I were to skip all of this except for the single mandatory battle, would that prevent me from being able to earn any of the achievements in this playthrough?

Yeah, since the final prize is the Phoenix materia - a summon - and you need all the materia to get the Materia Overload achievement. ;^; Sorry to report. Those battles are wars of attrition.

No, you get it after the mandatory battle.

Wow, two very opposite answers there. I know the Phoenix materia and the huge materia are rewards for the final mandatory battle. What I'm having trouble finding is if the previous battles are needed to ensure those rewards.

I'm almost positive they aren't for the huge materia and that leads to Bahamut Zero (which is needed both for its achievement and materia overlord), just not sure about Phoenix.

I'm almost sure I played through the game years ago without doing any unnecessary fort condor battles since i didn't like that minigame - and i still got the phoenix materia. i think i also didn't give them any money, but I'm not sure about that.

From what I understand, there is next to no reason to do the Fort Condor battles prior to the manditory battle, and even then throwing that fight and just fightning a pathetically weak enemy that makes it usually is much more effective anyway.

And if you (somehow) fail the mandatory fight, you can dig up Phoenix (and subsequently Bahamut ZERO) in Bone Village later. Visit Fort Condor on your first trip through though, agreeing to listen to and aid the cause gives extra points for the date later on.

you can skip it the first time your able to visit, when you are on disc 2 you have to do the battle there for the rewards. Need more help?

You cannot fail the mandatory fight because you won't get huge materia then. No huge materia = no overlord achievement.

You can still get a set of Master Materia if you fail any of the Huge Materia segments by beating Emerald Weapon.

Thanks guys, that makes a lot more sense and I'm glad to know I can skip them because it sure does wipe out my gil real fast to do that and I'd like to save as much gil as possible so there's less to earn towards that achievement. It's bad enough the sheer amount of grinding one has to do to 100% this game and that's a big part of why I never was a big fan of it.
dragonemp Jul 27, 2013 @ 6:02pm
the final battle is not missable, and since you are grinding for ap, i fail to see how you can have trouble with gil, more grinding = more gil anyway. in the end, you shouldn't even care about gil any more

there are lots of guides for this out there... you should try googling some time cause thats what I did the other day. Basicaly there are many battles, only the first two and manditory one matter. As all the others give nothing good or glitch out of there reward, The first battle is a weapon for Red XIII, the second one is a peace ring. the others are just junk like potions and nothing. The final manditory one gets you the pheonix materia if you win. So yes all of them can be ignored.

I would complain about the glitching prizes and bad items considering you have to double back all the way to fort conder to get basicaly nothing but clearly they had alot on there plate when they made this game so its still awsome even with lil bugs like these.

Ok for those who dont know what they are talking about.

The battle at Ft Condor is actually broken into MANY battles and if you miss ONE of the you will not get the Pheonix materia. So what I suggest is that you look it up on GamfFAQs (AbsoluteSteve has the best guide) on how to do this. As for wars of attrition there is a very easy way to win them every time:

When the battle starts where you can place your units pleaes ONE, only ONE, unit as far down as you can and start the battle, slow down the game all the way and then you can place another unit a bit lower and keep downing this, working your way to the bottom of the map. You will still have to fight a few things but aftter they are gone and you have pushed all the way down you win regardless of how many units they have left to send at you. If this doesnt make sense then read it in the guide from the author I mentioned. Cheers

So you have the time to reference a guide but you dont have the time to read it yourself? Get your facts straight please.

There are 21 Fort Condor Battles, 15 of which you can fight in, 1 of which is mandatory. The mandatory mission is the one involving the Huge materia and is the one you need to worry about to acquire the Phoenix materia. What most experienced players will do is allow the enemy to reach the hut on this final mandatory mission so that they can fight the boss in a battle and win an extra Imperial Guard. Afterwards, you can walk outside the hut to collect the Phoenix materia, and also get the Huge materia from the man downstairs.

The ONLY reason to do the optional Fort Condor battles is to collect some weapons for Red XII and Yuffie. These are only for a 'completionist' file, as there isn't much to say about the Magic Comb or Superball. The other rewards are Potions, Ethers, and Elixirs. Each battle has a short window of opportunity for you to fight, and may require extreme backtracking, such as leaving Nibel Mountain before reaching Rocket Town, or exiting the City of the Ancients while in pursuit of Sephiroth.

tl;dr
You ONLY need to do the mandatory battle in order to get your in game achievements. You will need to do up to 7 battles to get the Magic Comb and Superball if you want a "100% completion/All Treasures" file.

Yeah, I'd highly recommend doing the first battle just after the Mythril Mines because the weapon you get for Red XIII is good that early in the game. Doing the next set of battles to get the Superball is up to you. If you want to collect all the things, then go for it.

All of the battles after that until the mandatory one essentially give you junk. It's consumables and othing you can't stock up on later in the game. They are really only there for people who want to do everything and really like the Fort Condor minigame.
