Yamaha XG MU80 Music Pack Mod
(Updated 8/28/2022)
(RE-RE-UPLOADED!!)

Some guy named Raymond on Square Enix Forums rendered the XG midis through the high quality MU80 hardware yamaha synth. Here are the links to it, even featuring a special custom version of the last boss song with the proper chorus.

Use this mod if you want to know what the PC verison SHOULD sound like in terms of music. The Yamaha XG soundtrack had a much more Orchestral feel, with much more warmth and power.

The Mod is installed the same way as other music mods, remember to back up the default music if possible, or if you even want too.

Really? Huh, it seemed fine to me. Maybe your subwoofer is up too high.

I can't download these for some reason. Any chance to reupload them somewhere else?

Am i the only person that actually likes the sound of the regular PC music? I don't understand what all the music fuss is about. Don't get me wrong, i have the PS1 version too and i know the music sounds different, but the PC version sounds fine!

Sorry but GameFront is the only place I know of that can support the large file size and high download speed. I would have used Megaupload but that is long gone.

There is Mega, which is basically Megaupload. (Same creator.)

When you put over 300+ hours into a game that you love and cherish and can pretty much memorise every single note and instrument of the music, you can /never/ hear it in a different way. Take One Winged Angel for example. It has no vocals. It has. No. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Vocals. Hence why people decide to download the original ps1 ost to use on the steam version. Besides, MIDI is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ terrible quality compared to the PS1.

I'm the only one who installed the yamaha synthesizer? Was with in the 98 version of game there and had a much nicer sound. I myself have only the PC version but two friends of mine who knew the PC version and the PS one. Said at the time that the PC version with the Yamaha sounded better than the PS one. I told myself it can not say because I never played it on the Playstation.

I personally think this sounds better than the PSX version overall.

I will figure it out, the tricky part is finding a computer and time to upload with. In the mean time please add me on steam so you can remind me again later.

In terms of technical capacity the Yamaha Synth SHOULD sound better overall given the added Chorus and Reverb effects native to XG Yamaha Synth plus the high Polyphony.

In terms of quality, the Yamaha Software Synth uses 2 Megabytes of sound samples (maximum of 4MB if you have the S-YXG50 with upgrade), the MU80 uses around 8 Megabytes of sound samples and has zero latency.

I do not make any claim that this soundtrack is better per-say, but more specifically nostalgic to HOW FF7 should sound on the PC.

I notice there's an error in the rendering of rhythem.ogg (The Turk's Theme). At apx. 43 seconds in, the snaps come half a measure early, then correct themselves after a short time. This problem repeats at about 1:39. As soon as I heard it, I knew something was off. What I can't tell is if the original PC release had this same glitch in the sound, which I do not recall, or if this particular rendering is what is in error. If it's just this rendering, I'd like to find a way to render the XG midi into an ogg format file and correct it. Frankly, even if it's the former and the original PC version had this audio bug, I may still correct it.

I am not sure what you mean with XG midi rendering to ogg since the only files in the game I know are ogg already but since you appearantly know maybe this can help?
http://www.fileguru.com/apps/convert_midi_to_yamaha_xg
there is midi to ogg, midi to mp3 etc overthere. Can't tell you if good or bad obviously

You can only convert XG MIDI if you have the Proper Synth or sound module and recording/conversion software. MIDI is just data, not actual waveform thus cannot be directly converted unless you have something to render it with.

Its just such a minor thing, I don't think it would matter in the big picture. I never actually noticed.

I do realize what is involved with getting MIDI converted into any other audio format, but lack the sound fonts to do so through a soft-synth, or program desired to run the "conversions." I have software that will handle that segment of it, but currently only through general midi, or opensource XG soundfonts which don't seem to play properly.

I believe I've managed to track down a file that'd play the original PC version of the song. I could find a softsynth soundfont with which I could confirm this, then I have the means to get the ogg exported.

That said, you're right in that it's not really a pressing matter. I certainly notice it while listening to it, but it's not a game-breaking flaw so much as a minor nuisance. My interest lies in recreating the PC version as closely as possible, I'm not expecting to get it perfect.

I could upload all my direct conversions of the S-YXG50 (Slightly better than the S-YXG70) if you want. I was trying to do the same thing as a Raymond but he beat me to the punch with higher quality overall. (the problem is that the OGGs require loop-points and that takes a while to set up) So if you want those please let me know so I can plan a time to upload them all for you to play with.
