I've never understood the obsession with this game
Someone mind telling me why everyone and their dog seems to love FFVII so much? I played it back in the day, didn't think much of it then. Got it again for PSP a couple years ago, played 1/2 way through it again, got SO bored I almost lost my mind, and stopped. Now it's out again.

I just don't get it. I don't get why people love this particular entry so much. FF was new and cool, but doesn't hold up. FFII was bad, just bad. FFIV is still good, FFV is decent and FFVI is amazing. Even FFX is better than this. What am I missing that makes this such a cult obsession?

There isn't anything anyone can say to you that will convince you of anything.

Nostalgia. I belive FF7 was a lot of people's introduction to the JRPG genre

It's a good game.

People view it through nostalgia-goggles however, since it's a lot of peoples first Final Fantasy game. Same with FFX.

its one of the best storys in final fantasy 7 and fun also you get into the chracters and story and want to know more about the history of final fantasy

It was a lot of people's first RPG (also as an angsty teen and Cloud was very relatable) and it was (probably?) the first 3D RPG. This is what I actually think, I'm serious.

What's an opinion?? v:beatmeat:v

You're bad at this; Please stop.

Video games really do have awful stories though?

That makes sense actually. I guess I'm just too old and jaded now to get into it

Come back when you played Deus Ex.

My favourite jrpg will always be Secret of Mana however I loved the materia system in this game, its just a dynamic I thought was unique. If ff13 had had ffx's sphere leveling system, ff7's materia system and the loot system from ffxii then I would have been in heaven and hadn't been on rails then I would have loved it.

Yeah, I think it's mostly nostalgia - I actually like FFVIII better, I enjoyed the collecting system.

I was also an angsty teen when I first played it, and I actually enjoyed it then. But it's aged so poorly in terms of just being boring to actually play, and as I've grown and better understood what I think makes for good story telling I've moved away from thinking video games are capable of having stories that hold up to any real amount of scrutiny. So my views have changed from it being a good game to just being a relic of why games really aren't made like that anymore.

I think FF8's story is bad and most of the gameplay is the same boring turn based combat that I've really moved away from having any interest in, but I still think the junction mechanic and how the GFs effected action options was a really fun addition to the game over what FF7 had in materia. Sure, drawing wasn't very fun, but you could use GFs to mostly avoid needing to grind out drawing for spell junctions.

Yeah, "all" was hyperbole. I think there are some games with passable stories, but that's generally much more from character development and interactions rather than the actually story/plot of the game itself.

Goldeneye used to be considered a FPS masterpiece , yet that has aged disgracefully
Games age , get over it doesnt mean its not a good game.
