If you played the PS1 version on (or connected the PSP to) a 50" HDTV it would look absolutely shocking.
Also I do know that the PSP versions graphics only 'look' better because they are on a smaller screen. That's why I said it in the OP. The reason that they look better doesn't really matter to me, only the fact that they look better in the first place.
Buying a PSX, PS2, PS3 or PSP along with the game would be quite a bit more expensive than the $12 USD that this costs so it's not really a feasible option for everyone.
And in light of your comment about how it doesn't matter how it looks better...."Hey baby, it looks real nice compared to this tooth pick doesn't it?!"
It's one of the greatest of its generation. Not the greatest ever made. For the time when it was created, how it exploited its console strength and hide its original weakness and also how it was as much intuitive as easy to play and to understand, it was sure a masterpiece.
Now, it's a pack of data who have lost most of its strength since many better titles (in every way) have been released. If that game was to be released today and didn't had its history it had back then, its score wouldn't exceed 5/10 without any changes to how it's currently is.
I won't spoile the story in case someone haven't played it at all, but now, the story explained in FF7 is actually close but not yet at the same level as a B category science fiction movie. Back then, due to restriction and how hard was to release even just a 3D game, it was amazing. Now, SE simply drain every bit of life juice they can from that old piece.
After it got released, the genre took a hype and many cheap copies were released, which actually made it stand even more out. But with the next gen consoles (especially the portable ones) and many games with 2x-5x more content and more complete story and not as much hang-over and dismissing, the game have really lost at its own game. (If they didn't released both the movie "Advent Children" and also the other bits of stories like Zack's story on the PSP, this game was actually getting forgotten due to how much its troll the players at giving half-finished stories.)
He clearly said "one of the greatest games ever made". Read the entire thing before you post something like that.
