Otherwise the new copies are the only way to get more of the materia.
Master as many as you need for your characters. For the achievement you need a copy of every masterd materia plus the three Master ones.
Beating Emerald gives you an item which you can exchange for one set of Master materias.
Blending only takes away magic, command and summon ones so feel free to sell other new born types if you do not need them.
If you have Mastered a Materia, AP gain from battles is non-existant on that particular Materia anymore, so I generally swap out the Mastered for the new one, when grinding. :D
Just one final question: Does the master materias count toward the materia overlord achievement?
Thanks, and cheers
Yeah it is the same. That's why it's best to keep those new copies you get once you master them IMO.
It only counts if you have a mastered copy of it still.
I found out the hard way that you needed to own all the mastered materias for that achievement after blending my master summon.
Didn't matter *that* much because I only lost 30 mins or so backing up and reloading a previous save before I blended.
But I could see it annoying someone who saves on 1 slot every time lol.
