It depends on which translation you read.
Earisu Geinzubūru is her Japanese name, usually written Aerith Gainsborough in most media, except for in the English version of the game , where her name is Aeris.

Aeris was a mistranslation, it's supposed to be Aerith, which is why they've used that name in every other Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts game. Some people do prefer the name Aeris, as it was the original name (even if it wasn't meant to be.) Personally, I prefer Aerith, but you can go with whichever you like better. Just keep in mind that it's Aerith in everything else.

I prefer Aerith but it seems like it simply depends upon what media you are referring to, for FF7 it seems like it is Aeris while in most other games I see Aerith. I guess go with what Greg said and then just use whatever you prefer for replaying the game :)

If you look into the game files, by default, her name is Aerith. However, due to a mistranslation on the name select screen, it automatically gets changed to Aeris, unless you manually edit it when you get her in your party.

Change it to Aerith, because you're cool. While your at it, when you get Red, make sure you change his name to "Nanaki" because you know better.

I will always use Aeris, and I find the sound pleasant, it just rolls off the tongue.

Yet, Aerith just sounds funny. It is a name I would give to my dog. Not one I loved, either. It is a word that sounds odd, in a non-cool way.


To answer your question, it IS Aerith, but I will never obey.

That said, name Red XIII to Nanaki because you are a dufus if you don't. Or a Queef. Yes, if you don't rename Nanaki to his correct name, you are either a first time player or a Queefus.

I dont know where people are getting that Earisu translates to Aerith. Aerith would be a propper english sounding name, but not a japanese name. Even translating the phonetics of Earisu translates to Aeris , since 'Su' does not translate to 'Th" at all, where its actually closer to 'Tsu".

The proper translation of Earisu IS Aeris (Americanized). For Aerith to work, she would have to be named Earitsu or Earishi-ta.

So unless the japense name of her is wrong , her name is Aeris.
