Menu Skipping
It's a little tricky to word the issue I'm having, but I know others have probably experienced it and maybe just haven't thought about it as much.

Basically, have you noticed that if you're in a menu and you press down and select (so down and the circle button or X button depending your mappings), the menu will actually skip the item you pressed down toward and actually select the one below it? So, essentially, when you press down and select really quickly, you're selecting the menu item that is two items below your original starting point. For example, Item is on the top of the menu, then Magic, then Materia. If my cursor is pointing at Item and I press down and select in one swift motion, it will skip over Magic and select Materia instead.

I absolutely HATE this. This is game-breaking for me and the #1 reason why I haven't been able to play it on here. Does anyone have a solution to this? If so, you are a genius and a king.

Yes I had this. It didn't take much for me to get used to doing it ever so slightly slower. I forgot it was a thing tbh

I wish I could ignore it, but I can't. I wonder if there is some kind of mapping out there or SOMETHING that could be adjusted that would eliminate this problem.

Are you using analog, digital, or keyboard input?

I've tried all of them - they all produce the same result. Test it for yourself and you'll see.

Well, admittedly it took a little getting used to you...you just need to remember to pause a split second when scrolling before you hit confirm.

When you make the wrong decision once or twice you soon learn!

The issue still exists to this day... The most annoying part about it is that it also happens in battle menus, which is absolutely annoying especially on the New Threat mod's hard mode :/

It's annoying but unless your on Active-Fastest it's a non-issue most of the time and in the Menu you just go slow, it's not a race and you're not on the clock.

Has anyone found a fix for this? It's driving me insane.

I've never played the PC version but this exact same issue with other JRPGs, and games in general, has never been an issue in the game, itself, in my experience. Rather its a double input issue involving Steam, the game, or possibly 3rd party software reading inputs twice so one of them needs to be disabled. Example: I use DS4Windows rather than Steam and I must set a setting on DS4Windows to avoid double input in some games that it would occur in. Alternatively, if you aren't using something like that try Steam Big Picture mode or disabling Steam's own input and using the in-game input. It will require some messing around based on your setup but this is why it occurs usually and probably here as well so it wouldn't even just be double down but double up, left, X, circle, etc. just you go down more than any other direction if memory is defaulting to top and not memorized last command and walking and stuff isn't as obvious as menu choices.

I really appreciate the reply, unfortunately I believe this is an issue with FF7 and not with my input. I tried both using Steam input and disabling it, I tried having my controllers simulate xinput as well as keyboard inputs, I disabled Razer Synapse, unplugged my 2nd keyboard and mouse that I use for when I'm playing on the TV, and I've changed the controls around as much as possible but still have not found any solution.

The reason I believe (but am not 100% sure of course) this is an issue with FF7 and not with the controller inputs is that when I push a direction on the dpad or arrow keys, then immediately push the confirm button, I can actually see the cursor move again even after the confirmation was made. What I mean is, in the menu, selections are on the right, the party is on the left. When I push down from items to magic, then push C, I can see the little hand go over to the party (as if to select for magic) but a few frames after that the hand on the right goes from magic to the next option, in this case materia. So the input isn't being doubled, if it was then the hand on the left would've dropped to select a different character, instead the game thinks I pushed down (or whichever direction) twice before I clicked confirm. I can replicated these results in the magic menu, the materia menu, item menu, in combat, pretty much everywhere.

It's a small thing, because all I need to do is just do my input commands slowly, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't drive me nuts. When I get deep into the game, I do my input commands at blazing speed, and I have managed to select the wrong magic spell more than a handful of times.

Anyways, thanks again for the reply, I'll keep messing with it when I get the urge to play. Do you happen to know what setting you use in DS4Windows? I haven't used it for a bit since I switched over from a DS4 to an 8BitDo Pro 2 for my primary PC gaming controller. But, I hooked up my DS4 and fired up DS4Windows to mess around with it for this game, I just was unable to find any settings for double inputs.

Just wanted to say I talked to PtownRocks on Twitch about this, he's one of the best speed runners for FF7 and plays the Steam version. Anyways, he did confirm that this game just doesn't do well with quick inputs sometimes due to the frame rate changes on the PC version. Just wanted to update everyone here, basically just don't go crazy fast with your inputs lol.

RIP. At least you know your answer and also know if you see related issues in other games as a potential solution. Quite unfortunate the end result.
