Cait Sith has a dialect and Scottish is the closest to its Japanese counterpart. The game is simply bad translated.
something like simply doubling random battle damage?
EDIT: The same mod I mentioned does a more accurate translation and restores some cuts scenes from the western release, among other things, as well. The only mod I know of in the collection that doesn't work with the Steam release is the menu overhaul.
See, I think SE should have done a remaster with the Steam release. Fix translation mistakes, replace the character models, polish up the backgrounds. All you said above, minus the voice acting, since I don't really think that's necessary in a game like this.
Maybe add a mechanic that allows you to swap characters in and out of battle, and allow non-participating party members to earn EXP.
A remaster is all many probably care about; and while new gen gamers may have preferred a full remake, a remaster would probably have been the happy medium. Veterans would have been content that the game and story (outside of some minor updates) would have been left in tact. And new gamers who are drawn into the traditional turn-based rpg's would probably at least give it more of a chance.
But I feel that SE missed out on the chance, and it would seem fruitless to go back and do it now (and charge money for a remaster) when mods already exist that can do this.
I downloaded the Final Fantasy VII Hardcore Mod today and I feel like I've been handed the game back - I actually want to finish it again. The difficulty is most certainly there (I got game over in the second battle!), the items and spells have been overhauled, the story has been upgraded for new villains and new enemies and FFVII is now challenging in a way it never really was before. I don't need a remake or a remaster now, they'll just feature flashy graphics, fix none of the storyline problems and probably won't include a Hardcore-style difficulty level.

There is some active work on it lately but still far away from finished.
Basically:
1. Redo the character models so they appear a bit more realistic (rather than the cartoony misfit design of the original)
2. Apply the same for some of the non-sprite designs, like the technology and vehicles (Shinra's helicopter, for example, especially the way it bobs around).
3. Polish up the backgrounds.
4. Fix parts of the translation, to make some things a bit more clear, and fix the spelling and grammar ("This guy are sick").
5. Polish up the battle view.
Really, for me, that's all it would need.
Resident Evil HD Remake is amazing
Then they could just replace that lame gold saucer high medium low attack fighting game with a dissidia arena style fighting game using all of Clouds and Tifas moves from dissidia and i guess Kains moves for Cid
(so it like all the other mini games in gold saucer you can use Cloud Tifa and Cid)
and add in Zack or at least make Zack a summon.
A remake would be nice but they would just screw it up or cheap out.
(oh also add the orginal PS1 script with swearing again have to choose between playing HD steam version with HD mods or with swearing i want both)
