Would you prefer a Final Fantasy VII Remake or Remaster?
A Remaster just being updated character models, backgrounds and stuff. Pretty much HD-ifying the game, with everthything else intact. Maybe Voice acting being added aswell. But the same classic battle system, 3 in a party. Remastered Soundtrack etc

Whereas a Remake being, A recreation of the entire game, with a more realtime action battle system, similar to Crisis Core.

What do you think?

This game is already an HD remaster, but it is still blocky, but made in HD. I would just leave it alone as it is now. If you want better, there are mods for that.

I'd say give it a completely fresh over haul and remake it altogether. FF7 is a wicked game and I love my PS 1 Version still but the version on here I purchased isn't too far ahead of the PS 1 Version that I've had for years and requires that seperate launcher from STEAM itself. It sucks but I tolerated it. Over haul it with like the mechanics to FF12, remake it, and ditch the launcher. That would make it so much better in my opinion.

A remaster would only show how poor the story is told and how unfinished the battle system is. But a remake would probably kill the feeling of the game. It both needs both: a remake in the story and battle system and a remaster in the graphic plus the ability to mod it officially.

Did you watch advent children? a Scottish cait sith would do my nut.

Cait Sith has a dialect and Scottish is the closest to its Japanese counterpart. The game is simply bad translated.

Speaking of mods, anyone know of one that works with steam and is not a huge grind?
something like simply doubling random battle damage?

Nope. To my understanding none of the retexture or any other mod for that matter will work for this Steam Edition of FF7. If you want to mod from what I understand you will want to get ahold of a Non Steam version of this one friend. That's just my understanding though from reading up on a few of the Mod Sites for FF7.

Indeed I have lass. I loved the Advent Children film and that they made Kait Sithe a Scotsman and actually gave him a speaking roll instead of just a combat roll whilst astride a big fat Moogle.

Most do work with Steam, but they remove the steam and square features, such as cloud saving and achievements. If you don't care about that, you can use something like the Tifa's Bootleg. I personally, just started using the FF7 Reunion Mod collection. It allows you to play with further enhanced graphics, but allows you to still use the Steam and Square Enix features lost with most mods. Anyone interested in a mod that doesn't break steam integration should look into it.

EDIT: The same mod I mentioned does a more accurate translation and restores some cuts scenes from the western release, among other things, as well. The only mod I know of in the collection that doesn't work with the Steam release is the menu overhaul.

For me don't change the spirit of the game at all... just things (i thought) could have been better when I got the game in 1998 - Always hated clunky World map/field characters- so make all the characters like they are in battle mode. make the particular sword cloud has equiped visible in field /WM. Re-paint the backdrops, make everything 16;9 and HD 1080p. I wouldn't like voice acting as goes against the spirit of FFvii imo (and imo has been poorly done in other FF titles)..unless like MGS1,which was cool. have extra unlockables for beating both weapons and/or completing the game i.e. have a sephiroph and Aeris characters (could be a clone of each) that can fight in your party and/or a Masamune blade (that actually works in game). Also an option to have a piano version of the soundtrack (you coud switch between both) would be nice.

See, I think SE should have done a remaster with the Steam release. Fix translation mistakes, replace the character models, polish up the backgrounds. All you said above, minus the voice acting, since I don't really think that's necessary in a game like this.

Maybe add a mechanic that allows you to swap characters in and out of battle, and allow non-participating party members to earn EXP.

A remaster is all many probably care about; and while new gen gamers may have preferred a full remake, a remaster would probably have been the happy medium. Veterans would have been content that the game and story (outside of some minor updates) would have been left in tact. And new gamers who are drawn into the traditional turn-based rpg's would probably at least give it more of a chance.

But I feel that SE missed out on the chance, and it would seem fruitless to go back and do it now (and charge money for a remaster) when mods already exist that can do this.

A remake will never happen for the simple reason that it's too much like hard work. Resident Evil and FFX got HD remasters because all they did was re-do the music (without writing a new score) and touch up graphics that, in RE's case, had already been touched up before.

I downloaded the Final Fantasy VII Hardcore Mod today and I feel like I've been handed the game back - I actually want to finish it again. The difficulty is most certainly there (I got game over in the second battle!), the items and spells have been overhauled, the story has been upgraded for new villains and new enemies and FFVII is now challenging in a way it never really was before. I don't need a remake or a remaster now, they'll just feature flashy graphics, fix none of the storyline problems and probably won't include a Hardcore-style difficulty level.

There is some active work on it lately but still far away from finished.

I'd go for a remaster over a remake, since it would probably be the easiest to do, considering the mods that have been made for it.

Basically:

1. Redo the character models so they appear a bit more realistic (rather than the cartoony misfit design of the original)
2. Apply the same for some of the non-sprite designs, like the technology and vehicles (Shinra's helicopter, for example, especially the way it bobs around).
3. Polish up the backgrounds.
4. Fix parts of the translation, to make some things a bit more clear, and fix the spelling and grammar ("This guy are sick").
5. Polish up the battle view.

Really, for me, that's all it would need.

Resident Evil remake = not as good
Xcom remake = not as good
Goldeneye 007 reloaded = not as good
Tomb raider = not as good

Let this be a lesson to you @Sckewi.
Leave things alone

Resident Evil HD Remake is amazing

Both they need to just do a remaster with the original game engine, updated backrounds and models with custom soundtrack between regular and remix (arrange) OST and at least add damage/HP break.

Then they could just replace that lame gold saucer high medium low attack fighting game with a dissidia arena style fighting game using all of Clouds and Tifas moves from dissidia and i guess Kains moves for Cid
(so it like all the other mini games in gold saucer you can use Cloud Tifa and Cid)
and add in Zack or at least make Zack a summon.

A remake would be nice but they would just screw it up or cheap out.

(oh also add the orginal PS1 script with swearing again have to choose between playing HD steam version with HD mods or with swearing i want both)

If I had to pick remaster vs remake I'd pick remaster because square-enix would just half-ass a remake. What I would really like to see is something like they did for Persona 4 have a series in the same style as advent children that told the whole story of FFVII start at Clouds 1st mission with Avalanche and have some flashbacks to crisis core to fill in some of the backstory and end it a little bit after everyones escape from the northern cave.
