can i play this game without playing any FF games before?
Hi, i've never played a FF game before. Would i have trouble understanding the world, characters or the story if i straight up start this?

But FF7 is a great beginner Final Fantasy to play. The first 6 had a more traditional medieval setting and each game tries new mechanics such as different magic or job systems. FF7 was a major hit when it came out on the original Playstation due to its more modern setting in an industrial scifi city and later on exploring the world surrounding that city while still mixing in fantasy. Also before FF7 the only Final Fantasy games available were FF1, and Final Fantasy 4 was released as Final Fantasy 2 in the US and and Final Fantasy 6 was released as Final Fantasy 3. So the original Final Fantasy 2, 3, and 5 were skipped until later on being released properly on future consoles and collections. FF7 was the first one on Playstation and going onward the games would release in proper order with FF8 and FF9 coming out later. FF7 is a very good start, as its magic system is very easy to understand and FF7 characters are the most well known Final Fantasy characters, appearing in Kingdom Hearts and Smash Bros. You can enjoy all the supplementary and additional material after playing FF7 such as the Advent Children film, which is a sequel, Crisis Core which is a prequel and you can even play FF7 Remake as well. Definitely pick up the game during the winter sale. Happy gaming! ^_^

Each game has a different story and universe. If you ask what are the same things:

All games

- The general storytelling is generally the same. A disaster is approaching and it is up to you to prevent it. Crystals or a similar power give you the power you need for this. Other than that, the stories are unrelated.

- Some enemies are the same. An enemy type added in one game is also added to the next games. In general, there are tough bosses found in every known game. For example, Odin is in almost every game.

- Chocobo is the common friendly mount in all games except the first game.

- Cid is a different person in each game.

So the answer is you will learn a whole story from beginning to end. You don't need to play an another game.

Thanks for the helpful comments; i'll definaely grab it on winter sale.
I got couple of questions about the "ageing" of the game. I've seen some people mentioning running it with some mods for better resolution or textures or higher fps, some say english translation in steam version was rushed etc and some note that i should install another community made translation and such... I got a little overwhelmed by all this.

It is not necessary to install the mods. The vanilla game is good as it is and the mods are additional things that change the look of the game such as adding in new models for the characters, textures, new UI looks, translation fixes etc. here is a link to the mod that is mainly used https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3155131570 It is not required. I recommend just playing the game as it is, because you can experience it with the original graphics as close as possible. I will link a video comparing the different releases of FF7 and you can compare and choose. Its about 10 minutes long. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dckf-r8seks I wouldn't overthink it too much. I would say buy the game and enjoy it, but feel free to take a look at the links I sent if it helps you make your decision better.

I think the reason FF7 was so popular, was because no matter where you were from, you could feel like you were a part of it's world. Besides magic, the world felt like it is today. Or even as it was back in the 90's. You have cities, villages, nice and bad people and corporate greed. Climate change. Messiahs. etc. And between the three on the PS1 era and even ones before it, IMO, it just seems the easiest to get into to me. One of the rare RPGs I have actually bothered to beat and beaten more than once, spending over 99 hours each time (clock stops at 99, so I have no idea how truly long I was playing each time.) Plus the PC version, which I do not have, you can mod for even more fun.

Nope, they are all stand alone stories for the most part. Only the games with the same number in their name are linked. There are similar things in each game, but none are related to the story. Mainly things like creatures, certain names, and certain items are the same. So it's more of common traits and not tied to anything that would prevent you from starting on any entry that you want. 7 is a great one to start with, since it is the first one made outside of the pixel era. Before 7, all FF games were either on NES or SNES. And there's a reason that it is a fan favorite in the series for a majority of the fan base. Go ahead and play and enjoy!
Nope, they programmed in this special technology that scans your brain to see if you have previously played all of the other ones before. If you try booting the game without having 100% completed the previous 6, it will not run.
This is where most people started with Final Fantasy. You'll be fine
