Heal materia removes negative status effects but some effects like being immobilised can't be removed via heal.
Cure just restores HP & you can damage undead enemies with it since its considered light magic.
For future references there is a boss who can grab your character & prevent them from acting, best thing to do is cast regen on your party members at the start & try to break the arms holding them or they'll gradually take damage until they die at which point the boss will drop their ko'd body.
You already have it. Regen is the third tier spell on the Restore Materia.
You should start finding some double growth weapons not long after where you are in the game. It does depend on if you've done any grinding it isn't entirely required but it tends to be force of habit for me when I play. I have before left Midgar with level three limit breaks and tend to catch the rest up in the forest near Junon which is a decent spot for grinding for limit breaks and the AP isn't terrible.
There is grinding in this game but getting double/triple growth weapons or double growth armor helps with gaining AP & you can get xp+ materia later on which speeds up gaining levels.
