question about this version of ff7
is this the game old ass version of the pc version that has millions of issues and you have to use a bunch of mods and stuff to get running and looking not so horribly on modern system or is this at least updated to run in new systems without having to download any extra stuff?

Is this the "old ass" version? Yes, this is the '97 one. Does this one have issues, though? I personally never had issues with the game running. You can always enhance your experience with mods, though. The game isn't obviously very pretty anymore. I never had to download extra stuff in order to make it work.

This is not the "ORIGINAL" per-se
A number of things have been updated/enhanced, basically a Remaster of sorts.

Do some research.

This is still developed from the older version, but has an OpenGL driver that'll run in modern Windows. It still has many of the graphical bugs that were in the original PC ports, and it mostly works with Direct Input controllers.

Instead of midi the music is played from ogg files recorded from the PlayStation original so at least it sounds good now.

As is this game is perfectly fine and doesn't require any additional mods to function. No issues that didn't already exist in the PS1 version. You might want to apply the Satsuki mod to faithfully enhance the graphics though

Mods are your friend... they help a lot.

But yeah it's a remastered version with the PSX soundtrack, not the original .midi garbage that sounded like someone was clanking tin cans together.

This is the biggest improvement honestly because the O.G. PC version was unbearable.

I remember my friend having it and he was so disgusted it didn't sound like the PSX version, I felt bad for him because he went with N64 instead of PSX... R.I.P.

I always(by which I mean these days, back then I actually didn't care) thought it was weird that the OG PC release used midi's

The original Windows release wasn't based on the PS1 release, but rather a slightly older version of the game. The PS1 release got a music update shortly before release. The version sent out to be ported to Windows didn't. I don't think anybody knows for sure why they didn't use the final version of the game. Probably the very tight and inflexible release window Squaresoft provided.

The game runs incredibly well without mods. However, it's GREAT to mod. Just keep in mind that many if not all mods will disable achievements. Just a little warning if you care about getting them.

Porting games over was pretty difficult back in the day, newer games use a lot of the same API's.
I imagine the early build was done on PC, and that's why they used it. The midi music didn't make sense though, not sure why they wouldn't just use the CD soundtrack like every other game at the time.

A soundtrack with over 80 tracks would consume some space. Midi was a decent replacement considering the PSX had proprietary sound hardware and there was no way the PC could reproduce the music that accurately.

Yeah true, the Steam version is like 2GB that was a decent chunk of someones drive back then. It wouldn't have even fit on my first PC back in '95 the drive was 2GB.

512MB per disk * 4 disks is about 2GB

Keep in mind the PS version literally runs off the CD, usually installation gives you a min/max option depending on how much you want to run off the disk and how much would run off the PC. Having multiple CD's is pretty normal for PC games at the time.

i just beat it recently and it runs great fully stock... other than no native playstation controller support. had to dig out my half-working xbox controller for this one and even then there's no dpad support and some buttons are all over the place which is a pain in the ass for the mini-games. better experience than 10 which had a green screen bug for a select few cg cutscenes which was incredibly jarring and lame

True, but I don't see anyone making a Max install that was larger than most peoples drives.

The Standard install requires 260MB of free uncompressed hard drive space on your computer. The Maximum install requires 460 MB of free uncompressed hard drive space on your computer. You must also have a Quad-Speed or faster CD-ROM drive to play Final Fantasy VII.

460MB is pretty big for the time also, I was running an 8GB HDD when this came out.

Keep in mind all the music of the CD on PS1 also has audio tracks. It's entirely possible to run CD tracks for the music. The installation would mostly be the graphics and sound files. The movies and audio would be on the CD's.
