Likewise, and I thought of leaving it, but then I thought - I'm naming the Character, not the species, that 'lil robot is still a Cait Sith android, just named after the one controlling it from ShinRa HQ.
So They got killed by Sephiroth, so Me, You and It climbed the mountain to try to kill him. Just before we got there, You gave Me the Black Materia and told him to stay back, just in case. Me thought he saw someone approach. It was She. She took the Materia and Me went to see what was wrong. The She Me saw was not the real She, it was Sephiroth..........
...... You and She had a date at the Gold Saucer and saw It betray the group........
......Bugenhagen told Us about his father's sacrafice..........
.......They preyed to Holy before she was killed.......
........He said You couldn't borrow the Tiny Bronco, so when Palmer tryed to steal it, You, Us and She beat him up and took it yourselves.......
.....most messed up FFVII ever......
(could have been worse, all 9 could have been named 'You'....
.........You said You couldn't borrow the Tiny Bronco, so You stole it.....
......after Sephiroth killed You, You travelled north, gave You the Black Materia, . . . . .
. . . . . . . You stole all your Materia, run around Wutai, chasing You down to get it back!)
That said though, it makes more sense to specifically NOT name Red XIII "Nanaki", despite that being a popular rename for him, for 2 good reasons: Firstly, his name is chosen by the group. Like he said, Hojo called him "Red XIII", but they can call him whatever they want. What are the odds of Cloud and the group knowing his real name? It's not like he'd tell them when he clearly has no interest in the group or their goals. Even when they get to Cosmo Canyon he still doesn't care about the group, he only goes with them because Bugenhagen told him to join the group. Secondly, when you get to Cosmo Canyon, Cloud gets confused when someone refers to him by his real name; something that wouldn't make sense for him to be confused by if that's what they've been calling him the whole time.
Naming Cait Sith "Reeve" is a new one, though. I'd say it doesn't make sense for similar reasons, though. There's a point where Barret calls him out, saying something along the lines of "We know it's you, Reeve." Well yeah, obviously it's Reeve if that's how he introduced himself. ;P
*Ahem* But don't mind me, I'm a bit of a story ♥♥♥♥♥, so names that create little plot holes like that tend to ♥♥♥.gle at me. :3
Edit: Stupid broken censors... READ THE WHOLE WORD, THEN CENSOR! Cripes... -_-
"Who's Nanaki?"
"Nanaki is Nanaki."
"Oh I get it."
If i gave someone a nickname, I'd be suprised if I later found out it was identical to the one they were born with, and 'Reeve' could, for all we know be as common a name in their world as George is in ours - and if (supposing we had the tech) a robot introduced itself to you as George, would you be suprised if you later found out the guy controlling it was George Bush? Yes, yes you would, and don't tell me you wouldn't because that would be too obvious a lie.
So the characters are not THAT stupid, and the plotholes are negated.
Of course, If you don't care about plotholes, and don't care to use the very plausible explination abouve (or think of an explanation yourself) THEN you can assume that a temporary idiocy had slapped the world every time these names are mentioned, for minor amounts of humor.
so you can either make a plothole for minor humor, or take an explanation for alternative naming that is internally consistant and doesn't break the storyverse (unlike naming everyone 'You' - THAT breaks the world).
If you want plotholes - no matter what name they have Cait Sith suicides to shrink the Temple, and is replaced by another doll. Both are controlled by Reeve. Neither has their own spirit/soul. It was like burning a pair of shoes, which immediatly got replaced with an identical pair. So why does Reeve have a morbid quasi-philosophical chat with himself regarding (to use the shoe analogy) the fact that the new, identical shoes, will not be the same because of the personality of the person wearing the old shoes...... it obvious bull, as its the SAME PERSON wearing the new pair, as in the same personality. THAT is a greater degree of idiocy (by Reeve) than Barret or Cloud in the naming issue AND ITS CANNON! (Lets face it the rest are not much smarter - within minutes of getting a new recruit, the Turks know their every plan, and no-one has a clue who's responcible. [How about the ONLY one to have not proven their loyalty?])
Come to think of it, no, with that level of stupidity, the naming think doesn't NEED an explenation - even without it the foolishness fits right in without the slightest plothole or inconcistency. With their idiocy, I could get away with naming Cait Sith 'Rotiart' (spell it backwards) and there wouldn't be any problems. Yuffie's New name will be Feiht, and Cloud is now Eruliaf. No-one will notice.
It doesn't ruin the story in any way because people only do this on the gazillionth play-thru.
Barret - Big Black (Rob and Big inspired)
Tifa - Tiffany
Aeris - Lexi (porn star Lexi Belle)
Red XIII - Red
Cait Sith - Chewy (my cats name)
Cid - Cid
Yuffie - Fook Yu (from Austin Powers)
Vincent - Vince
First Chocobo - Steve
Green Chocobo - Kiwi
Blue Chocobo - Agua
Black Chocobo - I don't remember but I'd say Pepper? Or something racist.
Gold Chocobo - Gil
Everytime I play this game I change the names up a bit. Im curious to see if anyone has any clever names for their people. I like sin_harvest post lol.
Idk why F.o.o.k is censored for Yuffies name.
I always wish thay they would have given an option (once his name was revealed) to either change it TO Nanaki, or keep the one you gave him. Like How Garnet's name changes in IX, but in reverse. In reverse, and optional. I always name Garnet 'Sarah'. (look at the Edolon wall in Maiden Sari if you don't know why)
Though yeah, I do think that would have been a neat touch if, after visiting Cosmo Canyon, you were giving a Yes/No prompt to change Red's name to "Nanaki". Seems odd that they would learn his name, but then never actually refer to him by it.
