They could update the graphics but thats just wasted money, because it doesn't change the gameplay or the bad story. If they change the story or gameplay then the diehard fans won't like it that much anymore.
I didn't even know that the original game cost them 30 million dollars, imagine how much it will cost to properly remake the game with todays standards. It would be a huge money sink & they had no guarantee that they even get a portion of the money back.
It makes no sense from a business perspective to remake this game at all. It would be better for the company if they actually made a new & good FF game that goes back to its traditional roots.
And you just summarized about 2/3 of the video haha. The fact of the matter is it isn't that it should be remade. Its the fact that it shouldn't be remade honestly. Remakes never live up to the original plus with games now costing up to like 50-100 million to make a remake of FF7 would be nill. They had the spin-offs, the movie, all that but the reason I made this video was to do like you just did here. Bring logic, maturity, and actual sense to why its not happening and the hypothetical of if it happened it would cost more then it would make. Thanks for the reply I appreciate that.
Take it this way (my opinion not fact). Final Fantasy 7 was the brand new game in the 3D next gen consoles in that time period. It was new and revolutionary and people went insane over it because it was the first RPG that really got a "push" to the top. People saw it everywhere and it was the best ever because before that RPG's were not as popular. They were more of a niche crowd up to that point, they weren't the big thing. Back then it was more about Donkey Kong, Sonic, and Mario. Most gamers then never even played an RPG. The closest would have been Mario RPG or Legend of Zelda games.
Anyway the point is. It was the turning point of a new thing then, FF8 and 9 did not even make a dent like FF7 did sales wise or critic wise for whatever reason (i like both of them equally to FF7 honestly) but Square had to do something so they did FFX on the PS2 to blend that "watered down, easy to pick up and play" system for the new set and it got popular again. See I have noticed in America Square has a problem with 3's.
Final fantasy 1, 2, 3 = all retro 2D games with deep stories and good combat
FF7 - 9 = 3D, Better Graphics good narrative, but also plots are more confusing.
FF10 - onward = "Final Hallway" as people call it.
Portable games are garbage, only 5% of them are worth playing at all. I can't really count that as a good FF game either, they basically looked at the remaked FF3 & slapped a random story & better graphics onto it & called it Bravely Default.
These people can't come up with new ideas & interesting story's, if they try they end up with FF13, where no thought was put into anything at all & they basically introduced new stuff for the hell of it.
They also go the lazy road, they drop this weird game where lightning can equip costumes (never seen before FFX-2) & then there is a time limit for the game.
Then there was also FF13, I swear to god, you only come up with these god awful ideas if you truly hate your life & making video games altogether.
Edit:
That wasn't my intend, It just happens to be that this is & always was my own opinion on this whole remake thing, I actually took time to play the game JUST BECAUSE EVERYONE ON THE INTERNET & HIS MOM CLAIM THIS GAME IS SEX.
That may explain the hype back then, but that doesn't really explain why people want a remake. I have played many games & what I really wanted in some games was a sequel & not remakes. Also, the graphics aren't that bad that a remake would even be justified, so I just don't understand why people like this guy make videos like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0LpvtbJ3qY
Literally, the only thing this game ever had going for it is the most sales for an FF game & numbers don't mean ♥♥♥♥. I have played Guild Wars 2 & this game has apparently also sold very well but it's just a casual themepark, what in the flying ♥♥♥♥ is wrong with this world?
Ofc that has not been done yet.
The big picture is remakes can work but seldom do due to the fact that people will expect Final Fantasy 7 to basicaly just be FF7 the game with next gen graphics and little to no change. The profit margin there is slim as lets look at the numbers (all hypothetical of course)
Since I have no spreadsheet of how much FF7 costed or how many copys were exactly sold during its first run (all of it is speculation no exact figures of course):
Lets just say FF7's original run on PC and PS1 sold 10 million copies okay.
10,000,000 x 60 = $600,000,000 in gross sales - the cost to manufacture, advertise, ship, distribute to the stores, plus licensing fees to sell it for the PS1. So yes they made a profit.
Now if Final Fantasy 7's re-release on Steam only sells 2 million copies and steam takes their cut (which i've heard is more then 50%) the amount of interest in a remake is about half of that if not less. The whole reason people still bring the remake thing up is because it gets people all worked up (I did the video to make a point as to why it won't be remade, and what type of change would have to happen hypothetically for it to ever happen)
If anything, honestly IMO the best option would just to do an HD remaster not a remake. Just clean up the textures a bit to make them run 1080p smoothly and look polished by todays standards. Redo the character's models and rerelease it like they are doing with FFX. That's the only viable option in theory. The issue is that the game FF7 has already been so watered down by Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, Dissidia, and Crisis Core that the series has been milked to death anyway. Therefore due to the current gaming culture (meaning the trends in gamer's tastes) has to be redirected to that time period or it has to be released as a Next Gen game.
Plus the reason remakes don't work is because you have changes due to the fact that if everyone has already played it and knows what happens the interest in the product drops tremedously anyway. So unless there were 10 million + people all funding a kickstarter with 20 dollars each the idea is a fairy tale.
I heard that from various people including AlphaOmegaSin (who respect but I disagree with) that he took it in the direction that Square Enix is a retarded corporation who is too lazy or too worried about making money. The issue is that if the company doesnt have a forcast saying THIS REMAKE WILL SELL it won't happen.
Plus as I said in the video with the climate of remakes being universally panned the idea of a Final Fantasy 7 remake is not necessary and it's a guarenteed disaster financially. Not that it wont sell but if the game costs 50-100 million to produce you can't forcast that it will sell more then the original game which sold around 10 million. 10 mil x 60 = 600 mil. Take that equation and tone it down to about 1/5th of the original meaning 2 million copies realistically because a remake WILL NOT SELL more then the original did unless some kind of miracle happens.
i don't think so
ffx was remade and i bought it and felt disappointed, it's exactly the same game just shiny. much like the steam release of FF7 same game just shiny.
After the fast paced FF13 battles these fights seem slow and dull, you can't find excitment in a story you know inside out, there's nothing to explore or discover.
resident evil 1 was a good remake cause they changed alot of the layout, moved stuff, added stuff, but it was a game i new the ending and plot twist too before i even started which ruined it for me. how much of FF7 could they change really? make it bigger? Gran pulse took forever to run across, in a world like seven would feel like running across the map in skyrim, by changing battle sysyems you change materia or party control, add in banora and edge or deepground? if you really think about it it was amazing for its time but wouldn't hold up well in these times, gamings moved on.
Simpletons.
Whenever someone says "Nah I didn't like Donkey Kong Country 3, the graphics were too bad."
I just shake my head a walk away..... Gameplay is for adults, graphics are for children.
