Stop saying it's "the best"!

Look, I'm not saying this to start a flame war. I like the game. Really, I do. I've always been a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series growing up. But I honestly think that way too many people are remembering FF7 through [wild] rose-colored glasses.

It was a good game in its own right, but even when I was a kid the writing seemed a little childish compared to both earlier and later FF titles. The materia system was by far the best thing it had going for it, which unfortunately isn't enough by itself to label good ol' #7 as "the best."

A lot of the dialogue - even after receiving a translation overhaul - makes me cringe when compared to the writing of say...FF4, FF8, or FF10. I own 1-14, plus most of the spin-offs and several remakes, and those three remain my favorite to this day. By contrast, in many ways it feels like FF7 was written by a homophobic teenager who would have been better off co-authoring "Wanted" with Mark Miller.

Okay, so maybe the Mark Miller comparison is a bit extreme. Few works are that terrible.

I maintain the opinion however, that the writing behind FF7 is immature, shallow, and extremely convoluted when compared to other FF titles. I think many folks are simply remembering it as being epicly awesome because when we were kids, it WAS awesome. Sort of like how Ninja Turtles was the best thing ever when you were little, but if you try to watch the 80's cartoon now, you crap yourself from embarrassment.

Now, if you'll notice, not once did I mention graphics. As a major JRPG fan, graphics mean very little to me. As long as the story is immersive and the leveling system is compelling, then you've got my dollar. That being said though, the chibi-factor doesn't help the immaturity vibe any. I almost would have preferred to play this with SNES graphics, rather than watching the painfully forced drama being acted out by Precious Moments figurines. (I especially love the "new and improved" version with the mouths plastered on in unflattering ways.)

Anyway, I realize it's not always about maturity. It's a game. Games are supposed to be entertaining. And you would be right - FF7 IS an entertaining title. On the whole, it IS good. I personally just don't feel it's the hands-down-best-of-the-best-love-it-or-die-you-troll of the entire series, and I don't quite understand why so many people - the majority supposedly - do feel that way.

It was groundbreaking in it's time and the story is spectacular. You are obviously too young to have exoerienced the magic 1st hand. FFVII was one of the first games I couldn't get enough of.

sure it wasn't final fantasy 1 you know the one that saved the career of the man who made the game,i still don't think sales wise makes it the best or groundbreaking it had a lot of advertisement and hype behind it.

FF1 until 4 (I think) were only out in Japan until recently (if at all). And it was groundbreaking because of the reasons Konachibi said. But not only that, but for sheer scale of the game. It was a big gamble at the time. One that paid off. There will always be attempts to make the franchise better, but calling FFVII is totally justified. Opinions are all relative, but saying that calling it the best is wrong, when facts dictate otherwise, is just wrong.

i have an english copy of final fantasy on nes before i ever got a copy of seven, people say that eight is also the best but again i disagree, then again people also say three(six) is the best, it's all opinons at this point, i said it wasn't the best you are making it out like i said it's the worst, we all know what one's the worst, that abononation known as final fantasy adventure.

so was i when i got the demo disc for edios interactive games, but then i brought legecy of kain instead of final fantasy VII, the entry level rpg known as final fantasy adventures was the worlds first english rpg from square enix, if i recall correctly, and it was also the easiest most insulting of it's kind it was to linier and held your hand, shows how highly japan really thought of us back then didn't it,why would i be trolling? i wasn't actually trying to troll anyone, shows how shallow you must be.
