I don't believe that's a term of endearance. Cloud dislikes her early on.
Also, the Turks, Zack, Aerith - they all have a weird relationship that isn't expanded upon. I think that Cloud genuinely loves Aeris, but not in that way. At least not totally. I think by the time she dies, he was starting to come around, but Sephiroth cut him off (YES I WENT THERE PLEASE COMMEND).
Honestly, I don't think Cloud has a love interest. Not a definite one at least. I think the unique twist in this Final Fantasy is that it's about the girls that love him and how they do, not the other way around. Each other one is about getting the girl.
