auto leveling trick
Years back, when the game came out on PS1, I had learned a trick to auto level on the out world map. The trick required using two rubber bands to hold the cirlce button (turbo on) and the left or right direction to get into random battles. I remember how well it worked, and the direction button didn't force change or defend, so character only attacked. Now on PC I tried it and keep getting change or defend, like the timing with the buttons has changed, and now I can't start the loop properly. Has anyone else had the same problem or have i forgotten something I should be doing different with my controller? It's been a long time since I've tried this so I may be forgetting something.

I've played and beat the game. The leveling trick is convenient and can get material leveled quicker while I'm at work. I don't want to edit my saves or run trainers in the background.

There is really no auto-leveling exploit. You can place a weight down on a button/key with turbofire and stand in front of the arm-wrestling machine at the Gold Saucer and farm gold, but the closest thing to an XP grind is in Junon.

After you have sailed to Costa del Sol, go back to Junon and in the middle is an area you'll go to much later in the game (the sub base). You can't go into the elevator that takes you there, but if you look on the wall next to where the guards are training, there's a panel. It activates an alarm. Touch it and you'll enter battles with disc-3 level Shinra enemies. The first few fights are tough, but if you can survive them you will earn a lot of XP and gil, not to mention it levels your materia fast.

The magic pots are the fastest way to gring XP and AP. You need a bunch of elixers, but luckily there are also enemies in the area that can be morphed in elixer.

Apparently a lot of people have forgotten about this trick then. I can still do it on my ps1 but the pc version won't let it work it's magic. Most of what's proposed online, I have to be present to make it happen. The loop with rubber bands was quick and easy, mastered material quickly, and had to be done early on in game because Aries was needed to heal with her limit. I give up then, no big deal. Was just hoping to reproduce the same setup and master material early on while I was at work. Thanks to everyone for reading up and giving advice.
Edit: autocorrect won't let me say "materia" lol

I may be late to the party here, but why not necro a thread.

If you are still doing this there is no reason to move the joystick at all. Just stand in the swamp SW of the Chocobo farm. The Serpent will always target you so you don't have to even move. you technically don't even have to attack.

Have 2 party Members who want to level up
3rd member is Yuffie with Sneak Attack-Morph (Using Conformer weapon)
Equip someone with Final Attack-Phoenix and HP-MP swap

When combat starts Yuffie will morph the serpent 80% of the time for an easy kill. If not, it will whittle down your forced until Phoenix triggers and kills it. The phoenix holder should have 9999 MP, so it can be used 101 times before you run out of MP, which makes for hours of good auto-leveling.
