Of course, you could play through Midgar and go after him afterwards, depending how far back your last save is. You don't get locked into the endgame point-of-no-return until you hit the very depths of the Northern Crater (the last couple of screens where Cloud gives his final speech to the party is the cutoff point. Anytime before that you can exit, it just gets more difficult the deeper in you go). You can leave the crater by going back up the rope ladder when you get to that scene, and come back later after doing the optional stuff. That's what I typically do.
Thanks!
I may do that. I was wanting to knock out Ultimate Weapon first to get Cloud's Ultima Weapon and use it in the battle arena to get Omnislash, but I guess I can wait.
Gold Saucer is still accessible after the raid on Midgar, right?
I'd recommend using Apocalypse or Ragnarok for the Battle Square, personally. Ultima may have a higher attack power, but it's based on your HP. Take a good couple of hits, or bad slot rolls, and your normal attack is nerfed badly. Apocalypse is the 3x materia growth sword you can get in the Forbidden Forest (SE of Cosmo Canyon, accessible with green chocobo), and Ragnarok is a win prize from the Proud Clod boss in Midgar. Both have very good attack power/accuracy, and are constantly so, unlike the Ultima Blade.
