maybe this will help.
I prefer to play the Steam version though. The graphics are slightly better and I just prefer to play with a keyboard.
The PC version has bugfixes because it has introduced more when it was ported. Also keep in mind that the PSX version is the final built of the game while the PC version is based on older backuped files. When Square had decided to make the port for PC they didn't had all files anymore, because the project was closed and everything (hardware, people, ...) had moved to other projects. At last the port team of Square in Honolulu hadn't much experience with coding for PC. They used a lot tricks to make the game on PC workable which is the reason why reverse engineering for this game is somewhat of hard to do and why Dotemu couldn't make much personal fixes to the re-release albeit every fix was already made by the moding community.
Which reminds me if you decide to mod the game I highly recommend you to use the PC version, if not stay with the PSX game.
We have already an easier to install mod manger:

If you want a lightweight mod I recommend this mod too:

The game doesn't need mods. They're all janky and half baked IMO.
I would definitely play the game without mods on your first playthrough.
