Best party for a newcomer?

I'm trying to figure out which party I want. I'm so far liking Cloud, Barret and Tifa as my party but I hear so much talk about either Cloud, Barret and Yuffie or Cloud, Cid and Yuffie.

All of those are perfectly good mixes with at least one long range character. It really doesn't matter as you can customise every player with materia.

Just go with who you like best or who you have the best weapons for.

Make sure you level Aeris. She makes the early and late game easy mode.

It's ultamately personal choice as you can make anyone do whatever role you want. I personally use Cloud, Barret and Aeris. Cloud on the front row, Barret for some ranged damage on the back row and Aeris as a healer/summoner. After a certain point in the story I give Aeris' job to someone else.

That's only because you're one of those players that want a challenge. Aeris is easily the best character with the best Ultimate Limit Break.

late game I like cloud barret and cid, they all seem to be heavy hitters. My plan is kill faster then they can kill me to hell with the heals.. for the most part

After sometime Tifa really hasn't been a good Heavy Hitter for me D: so I'm considering on going with this!
Cloud, Barret and Cid :) kinda sucks Cid's Limits are kinda boring (powerful but boring looking...besides Dragon lol.)

With regard to the OP, you can really play any party that you want. Just pick the characters that you like the most. Most of the characters are pretty well rounded in FFVII and the game isn't too challenging.

Just pay attention to what you're doing with materia and weapon selection. Don't bog someone down with 5 summon materia that they probably won't use, dropping their max HP significantly, or equip someone with a strong weapon with zero AP growth when you still need to level up your materia.

In regards to Tifa, she's pretty strong when you get a certain weapon that works well with Deathblow as has 255 hit%. I think it's Power Soul or God's Hand.

Well in my personal opinion, the best party over all is Cloud (because he is mandatory) Yuffie since (spoilers) you lose Aeris before the end of part one and it's always good to have a dedicated healer on your team (yuffie's second lvl 1 limit break heals your party) and Cid or Nanaki (aka Red XIII) Though by the end of the game i find myself using Cid the most as my third party member mostly because cid is the only other character in the game which gets a triple ap weapon.

You can make anyone a dedicated healer, keeping someone on level 1 limit later in the game just to heal is not exactly efficient.

Also, Cloud also has a triple growth weapon.

Having played the game multiple times, and knowing the story, I'm surprised how many people said Aeris. Tifa is a must, until a certain point in the game, you'll know when. Tifa almost always is my main advice, and I like Red for my third. His limits can be a bit rough, but he seems to hit hard!
