Game doesn't play?

When I start the game up I get a box for settings and junk. The controller settings don't seem capable of being changed (clicking it, pushing buttons on controller, do nothing).
So I click the button to start the game, it does a logo, then it shows a screen with the controls. I cannot get past the controls screen, no matter what I do. Both controller and keyboard do nothing.
The first time I started it up, I started it in fullscreen, and I literally had to force my computer to shut down to get out of it, because nothing was responsive, and it was forcing a black screen on my computer.

Years ago I played this for a few hours, and I believe it worked fine, but that was on a different computer (my new one is much better).

All I want to do is just play the game normally. I don't have anything like mods installed.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks!

Not sure what's wrong but, things you could try (not necessarily in this order):

1. Check if your VPN on your network is interfering somehow.
2. Change the graphics settings.
3. Reinstall or right click on the game in library and find the option to validate your files (in properties).
4. Check that your hard drive isn't overloaded.
5. Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date.
6. Update your operating system.
7. Upgrade to Windows 11.
8. See if there are updates or installers for the Square Enix launcher.

Maybe someone has more experience with this problem or try searching other threads.

I don't use a VPN.

Tried changing everything. No difference. (Also I have a powerful PC)

Nope it's fine.

Yup all good.

8. See if there are updates or installers for the Square Enix launcher.
Not sure what you mean here, isn't the launcher part of the Steam download? If I install FF7 here on Steam, it automatically gives me the most recent version right? Kind of confused here, mind elaborating?

It's useless advice. There is no update you wouldn't get through Steam.

Yeah it was just a guess, not like I get paid for this. My only guess is the OS incompatibility based on your responses but it could be something else. Good luck.

It says on the requirements:
* Starting January 1st, 2024, the Steam Client will only support Windows 10 and later versions.

So Win 10 should still be fine.

You could also check your antivirus see if it's somehow blocking.

And I probably run out of ideas there besides googling it.

I finally figured it out. When that controls screen pops up, hit "x" on your keyboard. Nothing else will work.

Damn that screen. Now I think I understand your original question. Yeah even if you have a control pad plugged in you need to hit that on a keyboard. It kinda wack. Sorry I didn't understand your original question better. Hope you enjoy the game.

Did yall ever figure this out. I click x but then the title screen is completely black. I can hear the cursor and I’m able to start the main cutscene but then the background and text is all black and it’s just cloud and barret floating in deep space. Any help would be huge

I searched and searched and searched for a fix. It's a permission issue on the square Enix store. Either sign up and sign in

Just figured it out for myself playing on PSXfin with the same issue. just went to my controller settings and turned off analog.
