When you do fight it use spells ,limit breaks & summons, make sure someone has the enemy skill materia equipped so you can learn the beta spell, which is pretty effective against it too so are gravity based spells.
Having a star pendant to protect against its poisonous bites & equipping the fire+elemental materia combo will reduce the damage of beta since its fire based.
I had Aerith in my party & used her lv3 limit break to make everyone immune to its attacks to make it easier.
Once you kill it, it respawns anyway so get out of the marsh quickly.
You'll want to come back to it when you're stronger though because you can learn the Enemy Skill Beta from it earlier than any other enemy, which is a very powerful spell at that level. The best way to defeat the snake legit and without being super over leveled is a combo of Aeris's Level 3 Limit Break Planet Protector (makes your party invincible) and either gear that reduces/absorbs fire damage or linking Elemental Materia to Fire Materia in an armor slot. The snake's main damage is from Beta which is Fire based
But seriously, there's no real point in fighting it. You can come back later and learn Beta for your enemy skill materias, but if you want to level something / someone you can do it quicker, easier and cheaper pretty much anywhere else.
More grinding in the Shinra building, before and after you get Elemental.
Also some more grinding around the Chocobo Ranch.
You will have needed to guess the password on the first try on the 62nd floor of the Shinra building to obtain Elemental materia, It is possible to get elemental up to level 2 by the time you get to Midgar Zolom, but it takes a loong time and a lot of grinding. Though is not really needed, just makes it easier.
You should be around level 13-15 each character should have at least arond 1500 hp, Beta does roughly 1000-1500 points of damge. The characer you chose to have with elemental+fire in armor will take around 600-700 dange.
Elemetal+Fire and Enemy skills on the person you want to learn Beta standing in the back row
The Star pendant found using the coupon frm floor 63, it can help protect one person from poison. Which not much but his attack will poison you. good for Aeris
Poison Materia should be up to Bio 2. He can be poisoned. Person not learning Beta.
I would use Aeris and Barret, (Cloud is there no matter what) both need to have at least both level 1 and both level 2 limit levels. Cloud could be close to Meteorrain, but Climhazard works just fine. MInd Bow from Barret can lower his MP so that he can't cast Beta, but if you want to learn Beta then why.
Before battle, some people choose to have Sadness Status to take less damage, but the gauge for your limits is slowed down. Some people choose to have Fury Status which you hit for less damage with attack and magic, but your limit gauge will fill up really quick. The Midgar ZOlom will make you rparty memeber Sad with his attacks. So it is good to have Hypers and Tranqualizers, which can be stolen from and dropped by the various criters around the Chocobo Ranch.
Aeris will probably be doing nothing but Healing Wind & Fury Brand so better for her to be in Fury.
He has 4000 HP. Sense materia is good to have on some as well to see what HP he has. When he reaches 3/4 hp he will then rise up, (Poison damge will not make him rise up) the first person who hits him when he does this IS going to be booted out. So dont have whoever is going to learn Beta hit him first. He will then likely kill or boot some else out shortly after. If it is the one who you want to learn Beta. Start over. When he gets low on HP he will use Beta. Midgar Zolom should only cast Beta once and once whoever learns Beta, it can be casted right back at him.
The most important thing to remember is that if you do win. RUN to the shore asap, because no matter if you kill him another one will always take his place instatnly. so you could win but then be attacked right away again. It is best to get the chocobo and ride across to the cave entrance and save. then just ake a step or two into the marsh to attract his attention.
And now you just got Beta WAY WAY early. ENJOY!
