FFVII Controller/Keyboard issues (Stuck at keyboard control screen)
Hi everyone. I'm looking for a solution or rather a fix for an issue I'm having on FFVII on steam.

To give some context I bought both FFVII & FFVIII yesterday in the steam sale and they both worked fine using my Xbox One controller. About 3 hrs later I came off the game and shut down my pc and came back to it about 4-5 hours later to play FFVII again.

Started up the launcher then plugged in my X1 controller. Hit start or launch, then skipped the screens using the controller until I got to the keyboard control screen.... this is where I am now having issues!

I go to hit x on the keyboard to get past the screen and nothing happens!?!

To cut it short I have tried relaunching steam, relaunching the launcher and the game, restarting and shutting down the pc, reinstalling the game, running troubleshoot, running it as admin, configuring the key commands and other things. Also my X1 controller is set as the preferred device.

The weird thing is if I launch the game without my controller been plugged in the keyboard works fine and I could play the game with it, if I plug the controller in after the game has been launched only the keyboard works, if I launch the game with the controller in beforehand then only the controller works. It's as if the controller shuts off any input commands from my keyboard once the game is launched.

The only fix I have found is to launch the game with both keyboard and controller setup beforehand, skip the screens using the controller as the keyboard does not work at this point. Then once I get to the keyboard control screen, unplug the controller and somehow the keyboard works again so I hit x, plug the controller back in and then wait a few seconds then I can hit continue and play the game using the controller.

I know I kind of have a fix but I don't understand why I should have to do it as it worked fine when I first downloaded the game and I have not changed any settings. The only thing that changed after coming off of the game the first time was a windows update but looking at the patch notes for it online I can't see that having affected it.

Any advice for a proper fix rather than my current work around would be appreciated as it is annoying to say the least.

Also all my drivers are up to date etc and my os is windows 10.

Edit: have the same issue with FFVIII as well.

I've been using joy2key and having no problems. However, my trick is to start the launcher, start the game, use the keyboard to get past the keyboard shortcut screen and then plug in my controller once I'm at the new game/continue screen and everything works fine for me.

That is pretty much what I do atm to get around the bug.

Would prefer not to have to do it that way but Square enix seem to be rubbish at doing ports on their old games. Heres hoping FFIX turns out better.

NOT MY SOLUTION, I FOUND THIS ON THE HALOMAPS FORUMS.

Alright problem solved.

You weren't completely off about the driver thing, but it's a little more tricky than that.

If you are using Windows 10 default drivers for you Xbox One controller, that's what's been broken by update KB3140743.

Solution:

Download old drivers from here: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/search.aspx?q=xbox%20one%20controller. You'll need to use Internet Explorer to access that link. Make sure you download the second one in the list (filesize 1.5 MB).

Extract the downloaded .cab file into a folder of your choice.

Go to Device Manager and scroll down to the Xbox Peripherals section. If you're using default drivers, the device is named "Xbox Controller". Right-click > Update Driver Software... > Browse my computer... > Let me pick... > Have Disk... > Browse... > Navigate to the folder where you extracted the driver package and select xb1usb.inf. You should now see "Microsoft Xbox One Controller" listed in the Model column. Select it and click Next.

Let the driver install. Your controller may or may not give a rumble of approval. To verify that it installed correctly, look in Device Manager in the Xbox Peripherals sections. Your controller should now be named Microsoft Xbox One Controller instead of Xbox Controller.

Launch Halo and test

The first time I tried this fix, I had to unplug/replug the controller.

NOTE: I'm not sure if Windows 10 will try to update the driver automatically. Just to be sure, I unchecked "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows" in the "Check for Updates" app's Advanced Settings.

ALSO: I'm not sure if this old driver will cause problems with Windows 10 apps (ex: Xbox App, Windows 10 games purchased through the Windows Store). Not sure if the headset will work with this driver either.

Interesting, thank you for the detailed information. I'll have a look into it and see if I can get it to work.

Thanks. I can confirm this also works with XOne controller in wired mode, spent 90 mins trying to make it work before I see this.
