By the other games, do you mean the rest of the Final Fantasy franchise or just the 7 spinoffs?

There are some reoccurring names and enemies throughout the series, but you don't miss out on anything by not playing previous titles. Each game is self contained, so you don't need any knowledge of previous final fantasy games to play it.

Seeing as this came first and all the other 7 games came later, I don't think you need to play the other games to fully understand the lore or narrative of this game nor do I think you'd miss out on much if you didn't.

no. some characters show up in other ff games and a lot of the enemy do such as malboro. i resantly found out yuffie teamed up with vincent in another game don't know the name of it but there is really no ff history in some of the games even the world has a differant name. i would suggest playing some of the other games though. i had the joy of being around during the atary days before play station and nintendo first came out i played the first ff game didnt get to play the second i have 3 up to 9 i have 10 and 10-2 on disk as well 11 and 12 i wasn't impressed with 10 and 10-2. but go ahead try the others out make your on judgement on them

Final Fantasy 1-12 are are entirely separate self contained games that have nothing to do with each other. The only thing they share are some common classic characters and enemies like chocobos, mogs, marlboros, etc. They also share common magic spells, summons, and equipment but these are all usually in name only and have unique characterstics in each game

Final Fantasy is not a SAGA. they are totally standalone stories and univeses, you can play any of them and never care of the rest games.

but universes has 'minimal' connections that you can see when got really deep on the lore.

If you want to understand the Multiverse then YES you MUST ABSOLUTELY play the other games. To me, TO ME, World of Final Fantasy is canon, it explains why Zack is in the Remake. *insert Shantotto laugh*

you don't need the other games to understand the story, I mean ff 8 had nothing at all to do with ff7,6,5,4,3,2,1. even the magic system is different. in ff7 the Materia learns the magic if you unequipe it, you can't do magic at all. In FF6 a type of stone that is the remains of dead "espers" teach you magic and you gain power, based on keeping the stone equipped after learning all the magic the dead "esper" has to teach. Now knowing the background of all the worlds in FF universe might be nice. But mostly the story goes like this. Sometime either long in the past or recently, a meteor crashed on that world, and events unfolded from there.

Story wise they are all within their own universe. Excluding sequels and spin offs like X-2, Crisis Core etc. But they all share a few things that make it an instant Final Fantasy. Like Chocobos.

Core mechanics remain more or less the same with a few changes mainly toward how magic is handled and abilities learnt to keep things fresh. Combat mechanics start to veer off to a live combat style over turn based around FF 12.

It doesn't matter where you start though. My first one was actually FF 9 then FF 10 when it came out. Then i played FF 7. I've played nothing before 6 because i wasn't alive and playing the originals of those is next to impossible now. I'm not really interested in playing a remake or port of a remake if i haven't experienced the original.
