It does not require a SE account and its free. In fact, it lets you bypass the Square Enix account launcher and loads the game directly. Your achievements, steam overlay and saves will work just fine.
It's perfectly fine to not use it. But you will miss out on stuffs like 60 fps gameplay, full voice acting, better looking 3D models, AI upscaled textures and 30 fps AI upscaled FMVs with the said improved models baked in and a ton of other QoL features SquareEnix never bothered with.
That is unless you know how to find and install these mods manually.
A lot of what is on offer just brings in line better controller support, widescreen support,
and a lot of ai upscaled textures that had me quite impressed.
I played FF7 originally as a 9 year old and beat it at least five times from then until my late teens.
I've also played the original ps game on an hd tv, as well as this steam release through.
The visual upgrades CAN be totally in line with the original visuals, but just enhanced in quality to a truly beautiful effect on modern hd screens.
I will say the 60 fps mod ran the game as though it were under water with vsync on, and without it on there was horrible screen tearing... but set to 30 fps there is no molasses problem.

I'm also trying that one overhaul, New Threat, and so far it has been a delightful and well done touch up to an experience I can recall intrinsically.
(if anyone is curious, my specs are
Windows 11

32g DDR4 3600mhz
rtx 3070

... multiple drives and partitions, though. Not sure if that was what messed with getting 7th Heaven running properly...
wait so this game requires a square enix launcher? i try to avoid that kind of stuff, damn
I think you can put steam to offline mode and start the game directly with 7H. That way, you can play without needing a SE account. Ofcourse this also means no automatic cloud saves or save booster. But people like me can live without those.
ah u know a link or thread where i can learn about this mod and how to use it?
It really wasn't difficult at all. I recently purchased this game and started a vanilla palythrough a few days ago. After just a few hours I realized it wasn't going to work for me. 15fps during battles made Tifa's Limit minigame a real pain, animations weren't smooth, etc. I grabbed 7th Heaven, installed it and utilized some of the suggested mods within it. Config'd some of the settings to my liking (60fps, optimized image scaling so it isn't stretched across the screen, and a few others). I don't really care about Steam achievements, and the game is smooth and beautiful.
Sure, I've made a guide on this recently.
