But to be honest, the grind is not that bad. As Mopey bloke said, FF7 isn't considered a difficult game.
Magic stat is a measure of how strong the spell will be cast by said char. Cloud has rather strong magic from the beginning.
FF 7 is easy and yet here i am grinding for fun under Corel :D cause its fun, with 7th Heaven!
Cure works well in the beginning because the player and the enemies are all low level. It is cheap, heals a large percentage of your HP, and it heals you for more than most of the damage you are likely to take. Because of the low power level of cure it will not increase the amount of HP restored as quickly as characters gain maximum HP or as quickly as enemy damage increases. Cure simply can't keep up.
So, even though you can improve the amount of HP that Cure will restore as you level up, through stat gains, or through materia combinations that increase the power or efficiency of your magic, you will eventually want to upgrade to a more powerful healing method, probably something like Cure 2 because it has a higher base power.
Most magic is like this, normally you wouldn't use a low level spell for the whole game because it is very difficult to reach higher numbers with stat bonuses alone.
Spells like White Wind, which uses the Caster's Current HP as the value for healing, ignore "power level", which makes them useful throughout the entire game.
On the couple of roadblocks where you might actually die, you can just grind your materia for less than 10 minutes and you'll be fine.
