Playstation 3 gamepad working, but D-Pad NOT working. Please help.
Ok, first I had to install something called the SCP Driver to get my Playstation 3 controller to work with the game at all. It is detected as a XBOX 360 controller though for some reason. It does work in the game now but only with the thumb-sticks. I want to use the D-Pad instead but that is not working. I did confirm in the Windows 10 calibration tool that the D-Pad buttons work fine.

How do i get this game to recognize and use the D-Pad for menu navigation and moving my characters around?

Das ist normal.
Obwohl das D-Pad woanders liegt, fehlt trotzdem im Spiel der nötige Treiber.
Das kann leider nicht behoben werden.

I have no idea why you would respond in a language other then the one the original post was made in, but I google translated it anyway. I had FF 7 working fine with this very same gamepad working long ago on another computer with Windows 7 with the D-pad.

Nevermind, I got it working with the D-Pad.

That person only speaks that language I think but has coincidentally helped others that seem to speak it on these boards, fortunately. Since you don't understand the language pay no heed to them. Also do add your solution for anyone else who searches if you will.

As I said, I was able to google translate his response. If google translated correctly, he said it was not possible. Since I am now playing the game with the D-Pad and not the stupid thumb stick, I can tell you it is very possible.

I will be more then happy to post how to do it if someone actually requests it. Anyone can update this thread at any time and I will see their message. Even in a year from now.

Honestly, I don't think anyone cares though. I am going to assume that with a gamepad designed for the PC, the D-Pad will just work.

For PC oriented gamepads like the Logitech series they often feature a switch from XInput to DirectInput which can solve these tyes of issues. Mine features an additional analog mode button to try and hard force it in some cases by direct mapping IIRC (I haven't used that button in a long time tho). Alright, well grats on getting it to work.

For anyone who knows, can all Logitech gamepad buttons be mapped to keystrokes the way their gaming mice can?

Also, are their any PC gamepads out there where the D-Pad uses four distinct buttons (like the Playsation 3 D-Pad) instead of a disc shape?

The controller I have came with software that can do this. Mine was the F510 model. I lost the install disc but I could probably find the software on their website if I checked. Idk if newer models have such software but I wouldn't be surprised.

About the D-Pad 8 vs 4 directions I'm not sure. Both function the same but I'm guessing you find it easier to not misclick or better feeling to have only the 4 directions directly touchable. If you are wanting to disable the diagonal directions the software may allow this, but if it is for the prior...
Astro C40 TR (mainly for PS4 but also has its own PC Windows software to support it, but it is expensive $199 as it is basically comparable to the Xbox Elite controller).

For PC players, the Astro C40 TR has its own Windows software. In it, you can remap buttons, create and edit profiles, and adjust stick and trigger sensitivity, among other things. Of those other things, the fact that is has an audio equalizer for the headphone jack on bottom is perhaps the weirdest, most impressive aspect of the whole controller. Like the Elite and its contemporaries, It costs a lot, but after using it ourselves we don't want to go back.

Also Razer Wolverine Ultimate and SteelSeries Stratus Duo

There are other options if you need, too, with a bit of searching.

Thank you for the info and the link.

I prefer the D-Pad the way the Playstation 3 is (with four distinct buttons) because I keep accidentally moving diagonally with disc shaped D-Pads. Or as you said, I misclick.

What was you fix for the d-pad I am having similar issues
Akarius Feb 17, 2020 @ 5:18am
Got mine working too had to play with my controller programs settings. At first it was acting like I was holding the first key I hit on the d-pad. but I remapped from the directional keys on the keyboard to ijkl keys for up down left and right. Dunno why that fixed it but as long as it works.

DragonKingAkarius, I fixed it in a different way, but I did consider this option of remapping keystrokes to the D-Pad. That is why I asked if PC Gamepads have this option of mapping keystrokes to the buttons in the same way that PC gaming mice typically do.

Can you tell us how you solved it?

Hi Klaphat. I said I would help and I will. Here is what I did. This worked for *me* with my Playstation controller. I just went into the game right now and I can verify that after all this time, it still works. I hope this works for you. -->

1. Go into Big Picture mode in Steam. The button to do this is on the top right.
2. Click Library, then click Games on the left side, then click Filter Games on the right. Type Final Fantasy VII in the search to bring up your copy of the game and click on it.
3. Click Manage Game on the left side
4. Click Controller Configuration
5. Now along the bottom you see rectangular windows that point to various parts of the game controller. You likely only need to change the window that points to the D-Pad but I changed most of them to the following configuration. Do NOT change the one for the four buttons A, B, X, and Y. Leave that rectangular window alone. Click on the other rectangle windows and change "style of input" to "Joystick Move". You can try just the one pointing to the D-Pad if you want. Either way, when you are done with that, click DONE to lock in those changes and that should be it.
6. To get out of Big Picture mode, keep clicking ESC until you are back at the main window. Hit the button right next to the clock in the upper right and click Exit Big Picture in the menu.

I hope this works for you. If it doesn't, it may not work for me in the future on another computer. But as of right now, my controller works the way I want it to in FFVII - which is with the D-Pad!
