I think you can only use a mouse and keyboard
mcdabbee Aug 2, 2016 @ 6:57pm
Is it good?
LilSoonerFanInMO Aug 2, 2016 @ 6:58pm
It's pretty good all things considered

Just wasd to move and arrows to control combat?

You can set it like that, but by default it's gonna be arrow keys for movement, and Z, X, C, and V for the face buttons

You should use a controller if you have one that works for PC. I say this because FF VII is a console port to PC. Which means its native control method is controller. You "can" play it with keyboard and mouse, but you will soon come to realise if you have a working control pad this game was designed to be controlled with a controller. Keyboard and mouse are just too many keys for a game that has relatively few. This is no MMO or any type of game with a gamut of different keybindings, afterall.

The following site ought to help.

OK so the short of it is XBOX controller is considered the best for PC gaming, however the link posted above should enable you to get a DS4 controller set up as you want it to be for PC gaming. It will just take a bit of effort.

It works with a controller, I preferred it over keyboard and mouse with this game. You have to remap all the buttons in the settings though because the way they have it set up is ass.
It doent requre one but I would reccomend using one as the keyboard controls are trickey to use (they are changeble if i rember correctly however)

It takes virtually no work at all to get a DS4 working with Windows.

Install InputMapper and sync your DS4 via bluetooth (or connect via USB), and you're done. You may need to go into your Game Controller page to set the emulated Xbox 360 controller to your default for older programs.

Here is how to set your controller as default:

On Windows 10, go to your Control Panel.

Click on Devices and Printers.

Find your controller in the Devices list and Right Click (on it).

Select Game Controller settings.

Select "Advanced..." on the window that pops-up.

Set your Default device to use with older programs to your controller.

Start FFVII, get past the keyboard control scheme page by pressing X, and enjoy using your controller.

You just earned yourself a cookie. I was having trouble using my PS4 controller with this and other older games until I did what you said. Thanks JCav.

Glad it worked for you. You'll have to do some re-mapping to make it similar to the PS1 controls, but it still works without doing that, just an odd configuration.
