it depends.... you should get a limit break everytime a enemy stronger than you attacks you with a powerful move. if it doesn't kill you - you will usually recieve a full bar for limit break (this obviously becomes longer to do later in the game the higher your level)

If your in Midgar, the Slums is where you will find the "strongest enemies" to help you get limit breaks

If you left Midgar already, then the strongest play to level up / gain limit breaks will be in 2 areas:
(1) immediately after you leave midgar, you will pass the chocobo ranch and the sandy aready before the Cave has a huge snake boss that you can run away from --- IF YOU FIGHT IT (and don't die) you will be able to recieve tons of experience and level ups for your characters and for your Limit Breaks

(2) you can exploit the forest right outside of the cave (when you leave after meeting Reno and the Turks again) head off to the upper right side, you will actually be able to do 2 things, you will be able to fight randomly in these woods to find Yuffie (secret character) and you can explit the monsters in these woods because they always run in multiples of 6 to 10 - so that means, more chances of attack/hits for you - play this area enough to level up as far as you need to before proceeding (once you get on the boat, you have to fight Jenova for the 1st time after Midgar)

Hope this info helps - if not - then just level grind and learn the system like everyone else, you will eventually find a working groove to leveling up fast. there are MANY different areas that you can use to grind and build up - but at the beginning (as far as I know) these 2 areas are your best.

Post-Midgar I liked the forests between Fort Condor and Junon (I think that's right.) Also use Hypers to keep your party in fury. That's always a big help. Keep them in the front row too. If there is a single party member that you want to give limit breaks to more than the others the purple independent materia "Cover" might be helpful.

yep thanks for mentioning the forest area again :) that really is like the best grinding spot after leaving Midgar.... OH, but I did forgot to mention the Hypers, yes use those whenever possible - they are very useful for fast leveling your limits & basically any boss fight.

If you wanna level grind Aeris/Aerith before she dies this area is your best bet honestly unless you cheat using a gamesave editor. [but where's the fun in that???]

And I forgot to mention, the level up of the Limits in VII is by how many enemies you kill, not necessarily how many levels up your are - which is why the forest as mentioned above is the best place on disc 1..... Here is a example of what I mean:

Aeris Lvl 1 Limit Breaks:
Healing Wind - comes standard with character
Seal Evil - use Healing Wind 8 Times to unlock

Aeris Lvl 2 Limit Breaks:
Breath of the Earth - Kill 80 enemies to unlock
Fury Brand - use Breath of the Earth 6 Times to unlock

Aeris Lvl 3 Limit Breaks:
Planet Protector - Kill 200 more enemies to unlock (total of 320 enemies dead)
Pulse of LIfe - Use Planet Protector 5 times.

This entire list for ALL characters can be found here: http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_VII/Limit_Breaks

(THE LAST LIMIT BREAK CAN NOT BE LEVELED UP - IT CAN ONLY BE PURCHASED OR FOUND!!!)

I forgot to mention that! I''m wearing my years in plain sight, it seems. I'd like to add one final point, though - In this case, it must be Aeris(-ith) who makes the killing blow. Otherwise it won't count toward her limit break(s).

I got my first Nintendo 8-bit used, IIRC, when I was in my twenties. Man, I'm almost 50 now! I hope the formatting comes out allright on this post. If not, you have my apologies.

I've been spending a lot of time with the enemy formations as of late, and I've uncovered a few interesting facts regarding the "best" areas for training in, and my conclusion that the Waterside tracks in Mt. Corel (same screen where you get the 10 Phoenix Downs) is superior to the North WEST caves in the Mythril mine, and the Forests of Junon (someone earlier stated that the North East caves were best; they're not).

Average per map:

Mythril Mines: North Western Cavern

Average EXP = 265
Average AP = 29
Average Gil = 407
Average QTY of Enemies = 4.2

Junon Area: Forests

Average EXP = 233
Average AP = 24
Average Gil = 410
Average QTY of Enemies = 3.8

Mt. Corel: Waterside Tracks

Average EXP = 355
Average AP = 36
Average Gil = 512
Average QTY of Enemies = 4.4

The waterside track is the 2nd best area in the game for average Qty of enemies, the 1st being Corel Area Grass, where you'll fight the Grangalan every battle. You could get 5 kills per battle this way, but the Grangalan is a pain to kill, so the waterside tracks holds the number 1 spot for me.

To see the average rewards and QTY for every screen, see the bottom-half of my formation charts:

Nice conclusion. You could have just Googled it though, save yourself the hassle. Not as pleasing, admittedly :)

If you are late game and grinding limit breaks, Corel poses a problem in that it is great for killing enemies and getting the first limit break in a new level, but not all that great for filling the limit gauge to unlock the second limit in the level.

This is where HP<>MP comes in handy, because you can make low hitting enemies to take a decent percentage of your max HP, which is what will fill your gauge.

Personally, i preferred having both optional players in my party who required the enemy kills part of the limit, and when they both unlocked it, zip over to MIdeel quickly - making sure you have your ATB set to Active if not already - and sit in battle getting mauled by those green things. Depending on the character and the limit, you could technically get all 8~ limits needs to unlock the next limit break in just one battle.

Ha ha ha lol, the only thing you'll find on google regarding the best screen for rewards is the post the I made last week on GFaq, other than that there isn't much else available other than MGSB's training random encounter FAQ, which is massively erroneous.
Here is the post I made:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/197341-final-fantasy-vii/73867194

Great advice regarding the HP<>MP Materia, I hadn't thought of that!

I used to use the Forests of Nibelheim to Limit Level as the Valron can be manipulated for its Dive Kick move, which deals 25% of your max HP. This can fill Limit bars incredibly quickly! Also, you can encounter the 6x Battery Cap here, which is the only random encounter that has 6 enemies in. Still, the Waterside tracks has a better average for enemy qty!

Come on dude, i just googled "where to farm limit breaks ff7" and the first topic is a GFaq one from 4 years ago with suitable answers.

Yours might be the only one with all the workings, but sometimes, people just want the answer :)
