I got elemental materia, but seems not working?
1st, Im not sure if it's okay to ask about FF7 remake here or if original has same mechanics with the remake, if not then I will delete this.

I got elemental materia in Chapter 7. Im excited coz game showed that it makes the weapon inflict damage with fire, ice, etc. So put it on Cloud's sword and i put fire materia next to it. Tested in the battle but seems not working :(

I read about linked slots but how do I get it? If that's the way to make it work. The elemental materia btw is purple, not blue.

For weapons though you get the links by going into their upgrade trees for each weapon and spending the points on the Add slot. If there is an unliked weapon slot it may link those before adding slots sometimes. It is possible to have all weapons at 8 slots (4 sets of linked pairs) eventually IIRC though some weapons get lots of slots and links early.

I'd recommend it.

Elemental isn't that good in the OG though. Ryu overestimated it. The materia is good almost exclusively for just getting Beta from the giant snake on overworld map just after Midgar section (aka very early into the game, just past where the remake eps 1 stops). Beta is, coincidentally, obscenely overpowered (it borders on being an auto win spell for almost the entire game) so by indirect association of assisting you in getting this as early as possible Elemental could be said to be strong. That said, Big Guard and HP Plus pretty much invalidate any real possibility of death for 99% of the game beyond Midgar plus reflect exists. You can also get the tetra accessory (as many as you want) which absorbs 4 or 5 elements vs just 1 element that elemental does. The game also gives out specific accessories/armor that absorb/reduce specific elements just as potent bosses using them come along for the players who missed the broken Big Guard.

tch... beta is decent enough but it's too expensive on mp it's a style you do you, that's 3 casts per ether and potentially jeopardize your emergency heal. besides you get aqualung way earlier anyway and by the time you get beta fire2-all is already on par, even trine is almost half the mp to similar effect, beta looks cool tho i guess

big guard is an entirely different league you shouldn't even bring that up here

i still stand by what i said about elemental, it's hella expensive to level up but easily carries till end game, faithful to every boss fight, for 1 slot either in armor or weapon that's hella flexible, that either saves your fight or turn the table offensively completely lopsided. hojo? elemental poison attacks heal me. Gi cave boss? heal me with fire possession.

elemental is sick, but it's so setup specific that you'll unlikely utilize it first time playing without knowing, which kinda defeats the purpose of an RPG lol

pretty sure you get only 1 tetra elemental the whole game and it's really late, wasn't that in gelnika? i forget, by then you're dealing with emerald weapon lol wtf

if you bring up another enemy skill i ain't even gonna talk to you lol, it's like saying an F1 car is better than my yaris well no sh*t captain obvious lol

but i don't drive a yaris just saying lol

lol yup it has time travel, and parallel universes (the whole Zack part). finger's crossed they keep doing well and don't butcher it in episode 2

You can morph Cactuars on the island for more Tetra Elemental once you get Highwind. I'll just link the location for the wiki because you might have issues finding the super small island, otherwise. https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Cactus_Island

Beta uses 35 MP so it isn't too bad. By the time you get it you should be able to cast it 3-5x on just Cloud, alone, at level 12~20, and far more as you level. I usually get beta before passing the Marsh, presonally, but otherwise most people probably will get Aqualung first as you say. You mention worrying about health but the best defense is a great off- I mean enemy being dead. :P They can't hurt you if they die instantly.

About Fire 2 vs Beta... Beta has 3.375x spell power multiplier while Fire 2 has 1.25x spell power multiplier (so less than 50% of the strength) on a single target. Fire 2 when paired with All materia and cast on multi-target will reduce dmg is reduced further by 33% while Beta is not reduced despite being an AoE. Fire 2 is a bit cheaper but it isn't actually relevant at that MP cost, especially for the sheer performance difference. This type of issue is kind of why Beta makes even Aqualung, summons (except Choco/Mog, which can paralyze even bosses even early into game), and magic look bad.

Big Guard is pretty absurd. At least in FF9 it cost a ridiculous amount of MP and FF8 it was a limit break. No idea what they were thinking in FF7 with it. I only mention it cause Big Guard + HP Plus is straight dumb and breaks the game giving you 20,000 (okay actually 19,998) EHP even in disc 1. >.<

Elemental is cool for the cave boss if you don't know how to 1 shot it with items due to being undead. That was probably one of the cooler use cases. Unfortuantely, fights are too short and boss dmg too low for me to need it. They really needed to buff bosses in the OG. FF9 had a similar issue with bosses being too weak (not dmg but health of bosses being crazy low and getting 1-2 shot if you setup right). I like the idea of elemental, and it is great in the remake, it just kind of fell flat along with everything else (summons, except Choco/Mog, Hades, KotoR for specific fights but mainly Choco/mog boss paralyze, or magic which was underwhelming but cool looking, etc.). Its neat if you're doing a no enemy skill run.

I also wish some of the cooler command and blue/purple materia showed up before basically the end of the game as there is some cool combinations but its all right before the end making it kind of pointless while the earlier stuff gets trumped by Enemy Skill. Such a bummer.

Fun fact since you brought up ATB active. Summons and any super long spell is really really bad on that setting vs bosses since bosses get priority and will get a turn between every action since their ATB will refill. :( I like ATB active, though, since I don't use summons aside from Choco/Mog (which paralyzes them anyways). It is my preferred mode so my characters can charge during each other's and the bad guy's attacks.

Listen, did I forget to mention Bad Brea-

I mean Hades, totally Hades, for causing massive status effects on the enemies? :steammocking:

Actually though, Hades is a neat one its too bad its gotten super late. I wish status effects were more meaningful against enemies in FF games in general, aside from paralyze/stop in most cases.

Remake is a sequel that tries to fool you as a remake. The name is in part the deceit but also the truth of what it really is.

Sephiroth is defeated in the original. He goes back in time in the remake and is trying to alter the course of history to achieve his goals. The whispers are thus trying to stop him from altering things too severely but also stopping your side from doing the same and thus course correct to keep the timeline the same. You can actually read the descriptions of some of them like the big ones for the final set of bosses (those three that have swords and stuff before Sephiroth) and their intel mentions they're from the future and stuff.

Aerith knows some details about the future, too, hence the comment about the flower meaning lovers reuniting and her odd interactions with Cloud at times or why she seems to know more than she should. However, she doesn't know everything and its not clear just how much she does and does not know.

It also explains the visions you see near the end such as Aerith's death, etc., and what is mentioned in the dialogue for her death in the rebirth (episode 2) trailer.

This is why when you try to help Jessie and others or Aerith almost falls Whispers try to keep Aerith alive, kill Jessie, etc. and sometimes you overcome them regardless but it isn't easy. This is also why you and Sephiroth both try to defy fate near end of episode 1 to force a new route of destiny, perhaps to save Aerith and to fix the future and also to stop Sephiroth. Sephiroth and the others mention things related to this, too. Marlene may know something, too, but we don't really know what is going on with her though there are various theories out there (none worth overly investigating imo, but she might not be so simple). In the original she pops up in the final cutscene and senses Aerith's presence before the lifestream is summoned to stop Meteor and she may have more secrets to her then we know not yet shown in the original. Red XIII also immediately calmed down upon Aerith making physical contact like he immediately accepted the party without explanation and had total trust, as if he knows stuff about the future... from her touch passed to him.

Lots of other details so after you play the original one day it may be worth replaying episode 1 to see if you catch the extra details.

What we don't know is why Sephiroth isn't immediately killing Cloud at times since he already knows the threat Cloud is. That part is odd. We also don't know why he didn't fight seriously at end of episode 1 as Sephiroth is far, far, so much stronger than your party it isn't even close (at least in the original). The current party shouldn't stand a chance against him, yet. His goals seem to a bit more complicated then just stop Cloud and company and win. This is also part of why episode 2 is titled Rebirth as things deviate and a new future blossoms and maybe other hidden tied in meanings.

Zack is dead in the OG timeline but you can see Shinra (or whoever that is) emblems are different from Shinra's in Zack's little cutscene indicating a parallel universe. Maybe at the end the party stepped into his universe or something else happens and he ends up in theirs or something. We don't know how he will be connected to the game, yet, despite being in a completely different universe.
Very well explained. Now I understand. I thought people are kidding when they said remake is a sequel to the original. As always, I appreciate the time u spent explaining it for me. Thanks.

I just bought the original game. Let's see how it goes.

I already played it. The combat is so relaxing compare to the remake (lol), at least for now. However, my main complain is I'm a bit of a lost where to go.

where you at? its largely the same stuff you did in the remake for the midgar section. if you're in the train tunnel run north repeatedly until you get to the right area (you will know). if at wall market and confused iirc its go to south east area and talk to the people to learn about tifa, then to don corneo's place, then to outfit shop for outfit, then old man at bar (right side of building inside bar), and rest is straight forward from there

Im just at the very 1st section where Biggs and Jessie were unlocking the door. Can't find way easily but maybe I'll get used to it.

Wow I can change the characters name. That is cool 😎

if you press <select> while on the map there will be pointers on possible exits of the map, you can keep it off, and turn on only when you get lost

make sure his name clout, not cloud

Blind run is fun. Never knew what I gonna get (lol). Yeah finally finished it. As for next, I guess I need to grind to get the remaining summon materia. So far I only got 4 (I used Fat Chocobo against Sephiroth XD).

Im kinda confused what to do next. Should I start at Chapter 1 all over again for Hard Mode or I should jump to Chapter 14 or 17 to complete the challenges? I heard about item that I can get when (or if) I defeated the secret bosses (which grants unlimited limit breaks), but I don't know if that's a good idea. If Im gonna head for that path just to beat Hard Mode easily, or save those secret bosses for the last, idk. If I do the latter, then getting that item would be pointless (I think), but I might be wrong. However, I know that won't be easy.
I recommend probably grinding some more desirable materia in simulator per tip given prior as well as money (equip gil plus) in the garage section (also gives okay exp but not as fast per min as simulator method stated). Once your setup how you want, or if you want to master everything and a few copies of important stuff like MP Plus/HP Plus/etc. then consider doing what you can without excessive difficulty of the arena fights in both chapters for Wall Street that you are missing and the simulator stuff. This plus materia/gil farm and leveling should heavily boost your weapon skill trees to the final level unlocking 8 slots, etc.

At that point you can just go chapter by chapter if you want replaying the game pretty easy from there on. Skip the ultimate accessory for limit break for now until you're properly setup on materia and max level which wont take long, and very preferably upgraded weapons some by doing a few chapters/arena stuff. You get the Gotterdammerung from hard mode simulator round "Three-Person Team vs. Top Secrets" which actually isn't too bad tbh (fire + elemental materia on armor to negate ifrit/final boss dmg helps a ton). You get 1x, only, of Gotterdammerung. The other two require you to beat DLC Integrade Intermission with Yuffie (takes about 2-4 hours, not too long and actually rather good). This unlocks "Three-Person Team vs. The Immaculate One" with Weiss, the hardest fight in the entire game (save it for basically very last) which gives 2x Gotterdammerung. Honestly, this fight plays out more like a Dark Souls fight than anormal FF7 Remake fight and odds are you, like most, will just cheese it with some magic spam cheese youtube trick just because the boss is immensely overtuned compared to any other fight in the game. You have to either abuse Tifa or learn to dodge the specific attacks in a certain way (like one attack requires a forward dodge always, another a side dodge, another a back dodge always, etc.) and it is kind of absurd for the average gamer. Fortunately, while the reward is insanely powerful it is not at all necessary for hard mode and 1x of them is already very powerful (Hint: Tifa has strongest limit break).
Hi, thank u again, I finally got one Gotterdammerung. I just wanna ask why Bahamut didn't use Megaflare. He was at 15% hp when he summoned Ifrit, I was waiting for Megaflare but he didn't do it. Probably one of the reason I got pass through the final boss. Was mind blown when I learned that Chadley is a c_____. Lol

Grats!

If you stagger Bahamut before he can charge and finish countdown for Megaflare then he has to start over with the countdown. As long as you kill him before he ever finishes counting down he will not get a chance to use it, especially if you burst him hard with magic. If he was at 15% when he summoned Ifrit, who he should have summoned at around 50%, then you were doing so much dmg so fast he probably didn't have time to cast Megaflaare lol

Nice, that's good to know that his Megaflare count down can be reset. Up to this point, I still don't know how to effectively use magic the way players I see do in YT. However, I do remember that Cloud's Ascension put Baha into pressure state, which gave me opportunity to reduce his HP to 15%, but I was never able to put him into stagger state. I cast ice and lightning but only inflicted small amount of damage, so I just decided to resort to physical damage, and the whole run took nearly 40 mins fight (all five bosses).

Anyway, I came back here to thank u. Your tips especially using magnify + manawall saved me from a lot of retries coz each boss' final attack can kill the entire party. Lol
