It's not trivial. You'll need to have up to date equipment and materia to beat a lot of the bosses. Some bosses can be pretty tough if its your first time. Post game bosses and Golden Saucer arena are quite difficult
I think overall it's more difficult than FF9, about the same as FF10. I don't remember if FF8 was similar. Not much about FF8 is worth remembering
Is the American version of FF7 harder than the PAL version of FF7?

This is pretty average RPG for the main story but the Dark Arisen DLC made this my favorite. I have played all FF but the MMO's and I always see the famous "It's like Dark Souls" qoute on this game but DDDA is unlike any other i've played and to put that perspective I started gaming in the 80's
Every Final Fantasy is hard until you finish it the first time.
Or these days, every Final Fantasy is hard until you Google it.
Like any JRPG, it really depends more on how much time you put into it. The Western one is actually more difficult because they included the additional super bosses. I don't think it had any significant gameplay changes outside of that.
so your more of an action/beat em up type gamer, which is good, turn based rpgs are a different mind set, all it requires is some practice. just keep at it and youll get it :)
