Survey: Do you consider Final Fantasy 7 an RPG?

It's definitively an RPG. There's not even any ambiguity or crossover with other categories like Zelda, which is an RPG or an "action RPG" or an "action adventure" series, depending on who you ask.

Some would say yes, some may say no. For a short time, I said no.

I'd say that FFVII is a 3rd person RPG, meaning that the story is being told from Clouds' perspective. What I'd call a 1st person RPG would be an RPG that focuses it's story on the player, and gives the player choices that will shape the story.

@OP - Whoever's saying it's not an RPG is *technically correct* because of what the original definition of what 'role-playing game' means, because you don't get to choose your role, your class, your character - you don't get any say in any of that. That's what 'roleplaying' is supposed to mean, otherwise ALL videogames are RPGs (because you play the role given to you). Doom (2016) is an RPG. Half-Life is an RPG. Pacman is an RPG.

I'm pretty sure FF7 wasn't marketed as an RPG when it first released. I remember it being marketed as 'an epic adventure'.

Having said all that: Nowadays, the term RPG also includes 'action/adventure games where the player can make choices', which muddies the waters quite a bit.

I hate to say it but I don't think there's a simple yes/no answer.

In my opinion - and I can't stress enough I'm not arguing with anyone here, just giving my opinion as a random internet person - I'd call FF7 an Action/Adventure/RPG hybrid/fusion.
