I think it wants to know if you want to free up materia from some other characters so you can put it on the guy about to battle.

Probably came up during testing because some players put all their stuff on one side of the team and left others with nothing, making a fight much harder.

It simply wants you to take materia from characters and reallocate it as the person above mentioned as you are about to split into two parties (one featuring Cloud solo) with two back to back bosses. Both bosses are actually very easy, especially the one Cloud goes against (just equip bio on him, useless on the other boss, so you can poison the enemies and give Cloud bolt as well cause boss likes to use barrier which reduces physical dmg by 50%). Cross-slash is good, too, to stop barrier early on if you can. In fact, Aeris' Seal Evil limit break is very overpowered for quite some time due to the ability to completely paralyze most bosses, as is Choco/Mog summon despite its weak damage. Cross/slash can do the same but Cloud's later limit breaks are so powerful that it beats out stunning the enemies (if you level his limit breaks properly the dmg scaling is very busted and he can readily 1-2 shot almost every boss in the game with them starting around just after finishing at the Marsh with the giant Zolom snake).

The materia gets switched around between the two parties.

If you exit the game and look in your settings under controller SWITCH is bound to a button on your pad.
Pressing switch will remove all the materia so you can open your menu and equip it to a character thats about to fight to make it easier.
You best map your controller well and learn those buttons as this comes up a lot later on for specific minigames.
TLDR: Switch is a button bound to something on your pad

This is the correct answer. The Switch button on PC is the Square button from original FF7 on PS1, or whatever the equivalent is on an Xbox or Nintendo controller. On keyboard I think it's the Del key on numpad. I have no idea why it's called the Switch button lol
