Either you're extremely ignorant or you're an asian apologist, just because a game is made in japan doesn't mean the characters within are japanese! I heard this stupid reasoning before, trying to force this flawed logic to get people to see your way is extremely arrogant. That's like saying Liu Kang is white because the game was made in america. FF7 was made with westerners in mind in order to be a successful hit in the states. The characters are exactly what they look like and nothing more, Barret is black, Cloud is white, Yuffie is asian. To further prove this point, FFXV was changed with western settings because Japan didn't think the game would be successful in the states being primarly japanese like it was FF Versus XIII. So stop being an apologetic fool, and use common sense.
also its artists' job to familiarize themselves with other races physical attributes and appearances in order to make a comepelling piece of art. i think its pretty obvious to anyone that black people dont naturally have straight hair.
also the artist would be getting paid lots of money and have his job and career on the line in order to draw/design barrett as a proper black guy. its absurd that you think he accidentally or unknowingly drew him to look asian on all accounts.
you fail to realise that he looks asian in the detailed artwork, but you just assume hes a black guy cause he has brown skin, uses slang to talk, and looks like a black guy in the less detailed, in-game polygon chibi model. if anyone here is racist its people like you who assume someones race by their skin color and speech.
also youre wrong about ff7 being made with westerners in mind. japanese generally dont care about other audiences besides their own. want proof? ok, so explain why the english and other language translations were so bad for such a major game?
And Barret Wallace is a English name, your point? Oh you don't have one, because Barret continued to look black in every subsequent ff7 game, movie, remake, ect...
Barret was created to look and speak like Mr. T. What are you surprised? or is he before your time? Some of his quotes are straight up racist and discriminating towards Cloud, such as "Get your spikey white ass over here" or "I'll go upside your spikey white head and bring you back to normal!". An asian guy wouldn't say stuff like that, that's what a black guy would say to a white guy.
You're totally clueless and have no idea what you're talking about. It's a fact that FF7 was created with westerns in mind, it's one of the many reasons why it was such phenomenon global hit, they deliberatly created a multicultural world to appeal to every race. And what's this? You state you have proof yet you want an explanation? lol ok. I'm starting to think FF7 was before your time or you weren't even born when it was released, at the time it was well known that translations weren't perfect, why do you think they redone Chrono Trigger script or other past FF translations as well? This isn't proof of anything other than in those days translation wasn't a big deal, heck they even called FFIV > FFII and FFVI > FFIII. In those days JRPGs weren't big hits in the states, FF7 was the first revolutionary breakthrough hit in the states that changed everything! And the multicultural aspect played a significant role towards that success.
Hmmm, I wonder.
