from what I remember, I recently got the big ship and and I think im on disc 2, not sure though

Did you just board the ship from Junon harbor after marching and performing drills in front of the president?

You should go to Forgotten City (the city with Aeris scene) and then take left road to the crystal there should be a cutscene related to XIII Grandfather and the Key, after that leave the city and try to enter Highwind (airship), certain cutscene (and music) should trigger here automatically.
