As soon as you get the Tiny Bronco is when you're able to access Wutai, which is the west-most continent on the map. Though I'd recommend going there later as you will lose all of your materia upon trying to reach the town.

You can go there now if you want, though I'd advise saving your progress first before going in if you really want to check it out now.

Also, you can't leave the Temple of the Ancients once you're in.

You're near the end of disc 1. Disc 2 is a bit shorter while disc 3 is just the final dungeon, the final boss and the ending, though you can still revisit other locations if you want.

^This. Honestly, a rather rough ballpark but end of disc 1 is about 60-70% through the game. Disc 1 is exceptionally long compared to disc 2, while disc 3 is basically just the final dungeon/free roam for extra stuff. If you spend a bunch of extra time grinding and doing mini games, chocobo stuff, etc. end of disc 1 could be a bit closer to 50% through.

If you opt to skip Wutai no big loss. Its purely a mini event for Yuffie and leads to some extra weapon stuff for her, but she honestly is a pretty lacking character overall. She does have one special feature, her weapon Conformer found in the sunken airship is the only weapon that doesn't suffer the massive 75% damage reduction when using the Morph ability. This makes her the best character for farming sources (the +1 permanent stat boost item). That said, sources are actually pretty worthless because Hero Drinks (which can already boost stats to +100% with 4 of them used in a battle, and bypass stat cap) exist and really for those who just want to truly min-max for no reason.

I missed getting Yuffie so do you think there's no point going to Wutai, is it a cool area and is there cool story points there or is that it, should i even bother?

Heck yeah, Wutai is cool as hell. There's Yuffie's questline and a whole Turk questline there too, and you'll see an old "friend" as well. Just make sure you get Yuffie first. If you don't have her yet, run around in a forest until you encounter her (you'll have to say the right things though for her to join you after the battle, if you fail try again and say something different). Once she's in your party and you approach Wutai it will trigger her questline. I'm not sure there's much to do there though if you don't have her far as I remember.

Any forest on the world map has a chance to spawn her as an encounter, but only after the events in the Mithril Mines. You'll have to fight her then afterwards you'll have a conversation with her. You'll have to do a multiple choice type thing and give the correct answers. You could look up those answers I guess or repeat it until you get it right.
